Plant polyphenols, such as flavonoids, are ubiquitous components of human diet, and have been recognised as efficient radical scavengers and antioxidants. Their protective effects were especially seen in cell-free assays. Whilst in living cells, depending on experimental conditions, polyphenols may manifest both anti- and pro-oxidative activity. In the present study, the effectiveness of fifteen structurally different flavonoids against hypochlorite-mediated changes in in vitro systems, with and without cells, was tested and compared. Quercetin was found to be the best protector against hypochlorite-mediated fluorescein bleaching and BSA thiol groups oxidation, whilst in living cells its effects on hypochlorite-associated cytotoxicity were moderate. Contrary, epigallocatechin gallate, pelargonidin and catechin, with less impressive hypochlorite scavenging activity in cell-free assays, were the most effective against 3-chlorotyrosine formation after hypochlorite treatment. Taken together, special care should be taken when extrapolating the results on antioxidant propensity of food bioactive compounds in vitro to the cellular milieu.

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is continuously shed by all cells in the body, but the regulation of this process and its physiological functions are still largely unknown. Previous research has demonstrated that both nuclear (cf-nDNA) and mitochondrial (cf-mtDNA) cfDNA levels increase in plasma in response to acute psychosocial and physical stress in males. This study further investigated these findings by testing 31 female participants (16 using oral hormonal contraception and 15 not using oral hormonal contraception), and the results were subsequently compared with those of 16 male participants.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), the most common fungal infection, is associated with high mortality of affected patients. Traditional diagnostic methods exhibit limited sensitivity and specificity, raising big challenges for precise management of the patients. There is thus an urgent need to find out a timely and accurate diagnostic method in clinical practice.

: Pinocembrin is a promising drug candidate for treating ischemic stroke. The interaction of pinocembrin with drug transporters and drug-metabolizing enzymes is not fully revealed. The present study aims to evaluate the interaction potential of pinocembrin with cytochrome P450 (CYP450: CYP2B6, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19) and drug transporters including organic anion transporters (OAT1 and OAT3), organic cation transporters (OCT1 and OCT2), multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE1 and MATE2, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP).

The treatment landscape for advanced melanoma has transformed significantly with the advent of BRAF and MEK inhibitors (BRAF/MEKi) targeting V600 mutations, as well as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) like anti-PD-1 monotherapy or its combinations with anti-CTLA-4 or anti-LAG-3. Despite that, many patients still do not benefit from these treatments at all or develop resistance mechanisms. Therefore, prognostic and predictive biomarkers are needed to identify patients who should switch or escalate their treatment strategies or initiate an intensive follow-up.

Olive oil and table olives are considered staples of the Mediterranean diet and have been associated with various health benefits. Literature reports that the final composition of the olive drupe is greatly affected by varietal and agronomic factors, each contributing to a different degree. To that end, the objective of the study was the evaluation of the contribution of different agronomic conditions applied to two Greek olive varieties (Koroneiki, Mastoidis) using a holistic approach of in vitro methods.
