Anaplastic lymphoma kinase positive, anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is an uncommon T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A rare morphological variant-small cell variant of ALCL may pose diagnostic challenge especially when it presents primarily as a soft tissue mass. We present a rare case of small cell variant of ALCL in a 14-year-old female presented with arm swelling with emphasis on clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical aspects. Pathologists should be aware of this entity when considering a differential diagnosis of malignant round cell tumor as early and correct diagnosis has important clinical implications.

Listeriolysin O (LLO) is a potent membrane-damaging pore-forming toxin (PFT) secreted by the bacterial pathogen . LLO belongs to the family of cholesterol-dependent cytolysins (CDCs), which specifically target cholesterol-containing cell membranes to form oligomeric pores and induce membrane damage. CDCs, including LLO, harbor designated pore-forming motifs.

Suppressing Tymovirus replication in plants using a variant of ubiquitin.

PLoS Pathog

Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

RNA viruses have evolved numerous strategies to overcome host resistance and immunity, including the use of multifunctional proteases that not only cleave viral polyproteins during virus replication but also deubiquitinate cellular proteins to suppress ubiquitin (Ub)-mediated antiviral mechanisms. Here, we report an approach to attenuate the infection of Arabidopsis thaliana by Turnip Yellow Mosaic Virus (TYMV) by suppressing the polyprotein cleavage and deubiquitination activities of the TYMV protease (PRO). Performing selections using a library of phage-displayed Ub variants (UbVs) for binding to recombinant PRO yielded several UbVs that bound the viral protease with nanomolar affinities and blocked its function.

The metabolite transporters of C4 photosynthesis.

Plant Cell

January 2025

Department of Biology, University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3RB, United Kingdom.

C4 photosynthesis is a highly efficient form of photosynthesis that utilises a biochemical pump to concentrate CO2 around rubisco. Although variation in the implementation of this biochemical pump exists between species, each variant of the C4 pathway is critically dependent on metabolite transport between organelles and between cells. Here we review our understanding of metabolite transport in C4 photosynthesis.

Autosomal recessive proximal renal tubular acidosis (AR-pRTA) with ocular abnormalities is a rare syndrome caused by variants in the SLC4A4 gene, which encodes Na/HCO3 cotransporter (NBCe1). The syndrome primarily affects the kidneys, but also causes extra-renal manifestations. Pancreatic type NBCe1 is located at the basolateral membrane of the pancreatic ductal cells and together with CFTR chloride channel, it is involved in bicarbonate secretion.

Uterine tumor resembling ovarian sex cord tumor (UTROSCT) is a rare, typically benign uterine tumor occurring over a wide age range (mean 52.4 yr). UTROSCTs often harbor translocations between ESR1 and nuclear receptor coactivators NCOA1-NCOA3.
