The radical homopolymerisation of 2-trifluoromethacrylic acid (MAF) initiated by Na2S2O8 in water, under the influence of pH, led to original water soluble surfactants, the decomposition of which was investigated. The value of the square of the propagation rate constant to the termination rate constant, kp(2)/kte, of MAF was 4 × 10(-3) l mol(-1) s(-1) at 80 °C.

Five imidazolium-based materials have been synthesised and used for the first time as palladium scavengers. Radical reactions of suitable bis-vinylimidazolium salts led to a series of insoluble materials through homo-polymerisation, immobilisation with a 3-mercaptopropyl-modified silica gel or co-polymerisation with ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate. These materials were screened as palladium scavengers with a set of palladium(0) and palladium(II) compounds in different solvents and at different starting amounts of palladium.
