Using the Wellcozyme anti-HIV recombinant assay at 47 degrees, a strongly reactive result with an anti-HIV positive serum sample could not be reproduced when the corresponding plasma sample was used. Dilution in anti-HIV negative serum or kaolin treatment of the plasma specimen produced the clear reactivity seen with the serum sample, and a reduction in incubator temperature was also found to reduce this 'plasma effect'. Problems were also encountered initially when haemolysed serum or plasma with non-standard concentrations of anticoagulant were tested. These phenomena were not apparent when the same manufacturer's test based on cell-derived antigen was used, indicating that the introduction of new technology may cause unforeseen problems although these can usually be overcome.

A label-free, flexible, and disposable aptasensor was designed for the rapid on-site detection of vancomycin (VAN) levels. The electrochemical sensor was based on lab-printed carbon electrodes (C-PE) enriched with cauliflower-shaped gold nanostructures (AuNSs), on which VAN-specific aptamers were immobilized as biorecognition elements and short-chain thiols as blocking agents. The AuNSs, characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), enhanced the electrochemical properties of the platform and the aptamer immobilization active sites.

Glycosylation changes of circulating proteins carrying the CA19-9 antigen may offer new targets for detection methods to be explored for the diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Search for assay designs for targets initially captured by a CA19-9 antigen reactive antibody from human body fluids by probing with fluorescent nanoparticles coated with lectins or antibodies to known EOC associated proteins. CA19-9 antigens were immobilized from ascites fluids, ovarian cyst fluids or serum samples using monoclonal antibody C192 followed by probing of carrier proteins using anti-MUC16, anti-MUC1 and, anti STn antibodies and seven lectins, all separately coated on nanoparticles.
