Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of transthoracic two-dimensional (2D)-echocardiography in defining the cavo-tricuspid isthmus (CTI) anatomy and its value concerning the ease of catheter ablation of isthmic atrial flutter (AF).

Methods: CTI analysis was accomplished in 39 cases: 16 necropsy specimens and 23 patients. Sixteen were patients with isthmus-dependent AF and seven controls with other supraventricular re-entrant tachycardias. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography and a right atrium angiogram were performed before radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA).

Results: The measurements of the CTI with angiography were compared with those taken with echocardiography and correlation was excellent (r= 0.91; P < 0.0001). In normal patients, the dimension of the vestibular thickness was successfully compared and validated with the histological examination of the necropsy specimens: histology median 6.8 mm, range 4.4-10.5 vs. echo median 6.2 mm, range 5.4-8.7; P: NS. Vestibular thickness was greater in complex than in simple RFCA (13.6 ± 1.9 mm vs. 10.0 ± 2.3 mm; P = 0.01). When vestibular thickness ≥11.5 mm, the ablation prone to be complex (sensitivity 83.3%, specificity 80%, positive predictive value 71.4%, and negative predictive value 88.9%).

Conclusions: Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography clearly depicts the inferior isthmus and, displaying the thickness of the tricuspid vestibule, it was related with complexity of the ablation procedure in isthmus-dependent AF.

Background: There is little information about when and how cavernosal sinusoidal endothelia develop in the external genitalia of fetuses.

Methods: We examined histological sections of erectile tissue in 37 human fetuses (25 males and 12 females) whose gestational age (GA) ranged from 8 to 40 weeks.

Results: The sinusoidal lumen was filled with blood in the glans of the penis and clitoris at a GA of 10-11 weeks, and in the corpus spongiosum at a GA of 15-16 weeks.

Background And Purpose: 2D linear measurements are often used in routine clinical practice during vestibular schwannoma (VS) follow-up, primarily due to wider availability and ease of use. We sought to determine radiologist performance compared to 3D-volumetry, along with the impact of number of linear measurements, slice thickness and tumor volumes on these parameters.

Materials And Methods: Single center retrospective study with 97 patients (592 MRI studies).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the stability of electrode positions in vestibular implants (VI) over a one-year period with seven patients.
  • Fourteen out of 18 electrodes showed no significant displacement after surgery, indicating good stability, while some displacement occurred in four electrodes, possibly due to measurement error.
  • The results suggest that the surgical techniques used effectively stabilize the electrodes, preventing migration over time.

Background: Immediate implant placement (IIP) in compromised extraction sockets poses significant challenges in maintaining the contour and level of mucosal tissues. This study compares the efficacy of vestibular socket therapy (VST) combined with acellular dermal matrix (ADM) versus connective tissue grafts (CTG) in IIP within the esthetic zone.

Methods: Twenty participants requiring extraction in the maxillary esthetic zone were randomized into two groups: ADM and CTG (n = 10 each).

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF+) tissue regeneration therapy on clinical periodontal parameters in non-smokers and smoker patients. The anticipated biological mechanisms of A-PRF+ include stimulating angiogenesis, thereby promoting the formation of new blood vessels, which is essential for tissue healing. Additionally, A-PRF+ harnesses the regenerative properties of platelet-rich fibrin, contributing to the repair and regeneration of periodontal tissues.
