Mycotoxin contamination levels in maize kernels are controlled by a complex set of factors including insect pressure, fungal inoculum potential, and environmental conditions that are difficult to predict. Methods are becoming available to control mycotoxin-producing fungi in preharvest crops, including Bt expression, biocontrol, and host plant resistance. Initial reports in the United States and other countries have associated Bt expression with reduced fumonisin, deoxynivalenol, and zearalenone contamination and, to a lesser extent, reduced aflatoxin contamination in harvested maize kernels. However, subsequent field results have been inconsistent, confirming that fumonisin contamination can be reduced by Bt expression, but the effect on aflatoxin is, at present, inconclusive. New maize hybrids have been introduced with increased spectra of insect control and higher levels of Bt expression that may provide important tools for mycotoxin reduction and increased yield due to reduced insect feeding, particularly if used together with biocontrol and host plant resistance.

Background: Aflatoxin B (AFB), AFB, AFG, and AFG are Group 1 human carcinogens, with AFB notably increasing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk. Sichuan Province, China, with its subtropical monsoon climate, is susceptible to AF contamination in various food items. However, the HCC disease burden attributable to lifetime chronic dietary AF intake in Sichuan has not been investigated.

Background: Levels of adherence to recommended protocols in an intervention trial can affect outcomes and confound the results. To broaden the evidence about the selection and utility of adherence measures in varying contexts, we describe the level of adherence to the Mycotoxin Mitigation Trial (MMT) randomized intervention using caregiver-reported survey questions and compare inferences of adherence between multi-module surveys and interactive 24 h dietary recalls based on our program theory.
Methods: The MMT was a two-arm cluster-randomized trial conducted in 52 health facilities (clusters) in central Tanzania.

In this study, we developed a colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip (CGIS) method that used the matrix-matched calibration curves of contamination ratio models to quantitatively determine the total aflatoxin in five herbal medicines. This approach addresses issues related to false results and poor accuracy associated with conventional methods. The CGIS was analyzed using a Vertu touch reader, and the matrix-matched calibration was established based on the absorbance ratios of the T and C lines, as well as the logarithmic values of the total aflatoxin concentrations.

The corn earworm, (Boddie), causes persistent ear damage to corn grown in the southeastern United States region. Increased levels of ear damage have been associated with mycotoxin contamination in addition to yield loss. Corn hybrids expressing proteins from the (Bt) may provide corn earworm control.

Mycotoxins are among the most concerning natural toxic food contaminants. Over the years, significant efforts have been made to characterize the risk associated with their exposure. However, assessing their toxicity has so far been elusive due to the lack of adequate models that closely mimic the physiological conditions of human cells .
