Robust pulse rate from chrominance-based rPPG.

IEEE Trans Biomed Eng

Published: October 2013

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) enables contactless monitoring of the blood volume pulse using a regular camera. Recent research focused on improved motion robustness, but the proposed blind source separation techniques (BSS) in RGB color space show limited success. We present an analysis of the motion problem, from which far superior chrominance-based methods emerge. For a population of 117 stationary subjects, we show our methods to perform in 92% good agreement ( ±1.96σ) with contact PPG, with RMSE and standard deviation both a factor of 2 better than BSS-based methods. In a fitness setting using a simple spectral peak detector, the obtained pulse-rate for modest motion (bike) improves from 79% to 98% correct, and for vigorous motion (stepping) from less than 11% to more than 48% correct. We expect the greatly improved robustness to considerably widen the application scope of the technology.

This paper presents RecNet, an innovative convolutional neural network designed for reconstructing cecond harmonic generation frequency-resolved optical gating (SHG-FROG) traces. Unlike conventional approaches, RecNet incorporates noiseless sample constraints through a domain knowledge embedded loss function, enhancing the network's robustness to noise and interpretability. The encoder-decoder architecture is intentionally selected to match the dimensions of the trace diagram with intermediate representations, facilitating the effective application of these constraints.

Photoacoustic microscopy has demonstrated outstanding performance in high-resolution functional imaging. However, in the process of photoacoustic imaging, the photoacoustic signals will be polluted by inevitable background noise. Besides, the image quality is compromised due to the biosafety limitation of the laser.

We present the subcycle spectral structures from attosecond transient absorption spectra of helium by accurately solving the full three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation in extreme ultraviolet attosecond pulse and an orthogonally polarized infrared (IR) laser field. We discover that the subcycle spectral features associated with the dressed 1 ( ≥ 4) states and light-induced states, referred to as , , and , can be strongly modified or even enhanced when the strength ratio of the orthogonal laser field in two polarized laser directions changes. To understand the spectral evolution of the subcycle structures, we perform calculations of the time-dependent population and time-frequency analysis.

High-order harmonics have been widely used as reliable tabletop coherent radiation sources recently, but their applications have often been limited by the available pulse energy. Here, we report that by using an overdriven intense laser in a long waveguide with high-pressure gas, phase matching can be achieved in three distinct "regimes". In the third regime, favorable phase matching is achieved at near-axis positions to enhance harmonic yields.

We demonstrated what is believed to be the first 1.2 GHz nonlinear polarization rotation stretched-pulse mode-locked Yb:fiber laser with a compact design and innovative components. With a compact Faraday rotation angle has been used in NPR mode-locked lasers, and we find that incomplete isolation of backward-propagating light does not hinder self-starting.
