Home telehealth: facilitators, barriers, and impact of nurse support among high-risk dialysis patients.

Published: August 2013

Objective: The value of home telehealth self-monitoring with nurse oversight has been demonstrated; however, there is a dearth of objective documentation of patients' experiences with such a model. We used a mixed methods approach to examine the value of home telehealth monitoring with remote care nurse (RCN) support from the perspective of participants in our study.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-three patients who used remote technology to self-monitor their health at home participated in a semistructured interview. The instrument was designed to help identify facilitators and barriers and to evaluate patient satisfaction with and effectiveness of home telehealth self-monitoring.

Results: Overall, patients reported high levels of satisfaction with RCN support as they received efficient feedback, were better able to identify changes in their health status, and experienced enhanced accountability, self-efficacy, and motivation to make health behavior changes. The most frequently cited barriers related to malfunctioning equipment or trouble with Internet connections, forgetfulness, and feeling poorly.

Conclusions: The results suggest that home telehealth self-monitoring with RCN support is effective in empowering patients to take a more active role in their healthcare and indirectly improve quality of life for those living with chronic illness.

Electronic address:

Background: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a leading cause of acute viral hepatitis, particularly in Asia and Africa, where HEV genotypes 1 and 2 are prevalent. Although a recombinant vaccine, Hecolin, is available, it has not been used to control outbreaks. The licensed three-dose regimen might pose challenges for it to be an impactful outbreak control tool.

A new biokinetic model for iodine in dairy cows was developed utilizing data from a 4 × 4 factorial feeding experiment with rumen-cannulated cows that were fed rapeseed cake containing substances known to influence iodine metabolism, and soybean meal without such effects. I was administered both intravenously and intra-ruminally to document metabolism pathways. The new model included compartments such as saliva and thyroid gland, often ignored in other models, and in contrast to previously available biokinetic models, it fitted well to our experimental data.

Federal Fluminense University, Department of General Biology (LARARA / LASBIV / LCR / PPGDOT), São Domingos, Niterói, RJ, 24210-201, Brazil. Electronic address:

Concern about radiation exposure to non-human biota and the environment has increased since the 1990s, resulting in several publications by UNSCEAR, IAEA, ICRP, among other agencies, which highlighted significant gaps in knowledge regarding non-human biota and resulted in the establishment of Reference Animals and Plants (RAPs). In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest biome has vast biodiversity, but there is a lack of information on the radiometric profile of plant species growing there. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the radiometric profile of Ouratea miersii (Malpighiales), endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest, collected in the State of Rio de Janeiro, city of Niterói, at the Municipal Natural Park (PARNIT), which covers a region of protected Atlantic Rainforest.
