Purpose: Early diagnosis and treatment of acute pyelonephritis in children is of special importance in order to prevent serious complications. This study was conducted to determine the diagnostic value of serum interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 in children with acute pyelonephritis.

Methods: Eighty-seven patients between 1 month to 12 years old with urinary tract infection (UTI) were divided into 2 groups based on the result of 99m-technetium dimercapto-succinic acid renal scan: acute pyelonephritis (n=37) and lower UTI (n=50) groups. White blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil (Neutl) count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, platelet count, and serum IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations of both groups were measured and compared.

Results: There was a significant difference between two groups regarding WBC count, Neutl count, ESR, and CRP concentration (P<0.05). In addition, the difference between the two groups regarding serum IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations was not significant (IL-6, 60 and 35.4 pg/mL and IL-8, 404 and 617 pg/mL, respectively). The sensitivity and specificity of serum IL-6 and IL-8 for diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis were 73%, 42% and 78%, 32%, respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive values of serum IL-6 and IL-8 were less than those of acute phase serum reactants such as CRP.

Conclusion: This study showed that there was no significant difference between acute pyelonephritis and lower UTI groups regarding serum IL-6 and IL-8 levels. Therefore, despite confirming results of previous studies, it seems that IL-6 and IL-8 are not suitable markers for differentiating between acute pyelonephritis and lower UTI.

Objectives: The role of imaging in acute pyelonephritis (APN) in the ED is poorly understood, with variability among clinical guidelines for when patients should be imaged, and the modality of imaging. The objective of this study was to identify the proportion of patients with APN being imaged, the proportion abnormal findings, and the association between abnormal imaging and discharge disposition.

Methods: A single-centre retrospective review of patients with a discharge diagnosis of APN at an adult tertiary referral hospital over a 5-year period (2018-2022) was conducted.

Background Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent predisposing factor for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Among hospitalized patients with acute pyelonephritis, UTIs are more common, severe, and associated with worse outcomes, particularly in those with type 2 DM. Pyelonephritis in DM patients is more frequently bilateral and linked to greater complications, with 90% of emphysematous pyelonephritis (EMPN) and cystitis cases occurring in diabetic individuals.

Department of Urology & Pediatric Urology, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Faculty of Medical Science, Hebrew University, Jerusalem, Israel.

Purpose: There are no guidelines, what recommend pro or against cystography for identification of VUR for adults who suffer from first episode of pyelonephritis. The aim of this study was to look at incidence of VUR in adults with first episode of pyelonephritis, and to highlight recommendations for possible reflux investigation in these patients.

Methods: We have performed retrospective review of all patients who admitted at our department over the last decade with the working diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis.

usually presents with erythrasma, a macular rash, but rarely it can cause extracutaneous infections such as endocarditis, peritonitis, pyelonephritis, and catheter-related bloodstream infections. Here, we present the first case of septic arthritis caused by and a literature review of invasive infections. The diagnosis was confirmed by the patient's clinical findings and microbiological examination of the joint fluid.

Background: This study aimed to investigate initial experiences and outcomes of a retrograde inserted new silicone-covered metallic ureteric stent (Urexel™) for malignant ureteric obstruction.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records for 12 consecutive patients who underwent Urexel™ stent placement for malignant ureteric obstruction from March 2020 to March 2021. The Urexel™ stent is a segmental metallic ureteric stent composed of a nitinol mesh covered with a silicone membrane.
