(1) Background: Chagas disease is a public health problem affecting nearly 2 million women of reproductive age in Latin America. From these, 4-8% can transmit the infection to the foetus through the vertical route, whereas horizontal transmission through milk during breastfeeding remains controversial. Therefore, the presence of () DNA in the milk of women seropositive for Chagas disease was analysed to determine whether a relationship with the infection of their children can exist.

Predictive Markers of Incident Tuberculosis in Close Contacts in Brazil and India.

J Infect Dis

January 2025

Programa de Pós-graduação em Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Salvador, Brazil.

There are insufficient predictors of progression to tuberculosis among contacts. A case-control study within RePORT-Brazil matched 20 QuantiFERON-positive progressors and 40 non-progressors by sex, age, and exposure duration. Twenty-nine cytokines were measured by Luminex in QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus supernatants collected at baseline and evaluated using machine learning for tuberculosis prediction.

The attempt to investigate hepatitis E virus (HEV) contamination in naturally growing mangrove bivalve mollusks captured for local sale in a touristic area of Maranhão state in Brazil revealed the detection of rat hepatitis E virus (ratHEV). Using international standard protocols for processing and nucleic acid extraction, we analyzed 89 bivalve samples (Mytella falcata and Crassostrea rhizophorae) with two broadly reactive assays: heminested pan-Hepeviridae (ORF-1) and probe-based HEV-1 to HEV-4 (ORF-2/ORF-3). Heminested reactions presented 2 (2.

Ambient temperature and dengue hospitalization in Brazil: A 10-year period case time series analysis.

February 2025

Barcelona Institute for Global Health, ISGlobal, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, CIBER Epidemiología y Salud Pública, Barcelona, Spain.

Background: Dengue has an increased worldwide epidemic potential with the global rising temperature due to climate change. Higher levels of plasmatic saturated fatty acid were significantly associated with liver fibrosis in HIV mono-infection: A case-control study.

Metabol Open

December 2024

Laboratório de Pesquisa Clínica em DST/AIDS (LAPCLIN-AIDS), Instituto Nacional de Infectologia Evandro Chagas - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (INI-FIOCRUZ), 21040-360, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Background: The relationship between plasmatic fatty acid (FA) composition and liver fibrosis remains scarce in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We aimed to evaluate the association of plasmatic FAs and liver fibrosis in HIV mono-infected individuals.

Methods: This case-control study included PLWHA with liver fibrosis (cases) and randomly selected subjects without fibrosis (controls) from the PROSPEC-HIV study (NCT02542020).
