Published: July 2013

The spatially resolved thermoelectric power is studied on epitaxial graphene on SiC with direct correspondence to graphene atomic structures by a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) method. A thermovoltage arises from a temperature gradient between the STM tip and the sample, and variations of thermovoltage are distinguished at defects and boundaries with atomic resolution. The epitaxial graphene has a high thermoelectric power of 42 μV/K with a big change (9.6 μV/K) at the monolayer-bilayer boundary. Long-wavelength oscillations are revealed in thermopower maps which correspond to the Friedel oscillations of electronic density of states associated with the intravalley scattering in graphene. On the same terrace of a graphene layer, thermopower distributions show domain structures that can be attributed to the modifications of local electronic structures induced by microscopic distortions (wrinkles) of graphene sheet on the SiC substrate. The thermoelectric power, the electronic structure, the carrier concentration, and their interplay are analyzed on the level of individual defects and boundaries in graphene.

SbTe-based flexible thin films can be utilized in the fabrication of self-powered wearable devices due to their huge potential in thermoelectric performance. Although doping can significantly enhance the power factor value, the process of identifying suitable dopants is typically accompanied by numerous repeating experiments. Herein, we introduce Zn doping into thermally diffused p-type SbTe flexible thin films with a candidate dopant validated using the first-principles calculations.

Thermoelectric (TE) performance in materials is often constrained by the strong coupling between carrier and phonon transport, necessitating trade-offs between electrical and thermal properties that limit improvements in the figure of merit (). Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to achieve simultaneous energy filtering and enhanced phonon scattering, effectively optimizing the TE properties of CoSb-based skutterudites. By introducing CuTe nanoprecipitates into the YbCoSb matrix, interfacial barriers are formed, which selectively filter low-energy charge carriers, significantly improving the Seebeck coefficient while maintaining high carrier mobility.

Wearable thermoelectric generator (TEG) can collect human body heat and convert it into electrical energy, achieving self-powering of the device and thus becoming a hot research topic at present. By utilization of three-dimensional spiral thin-film thermoelectric structures and passive radiation cooling methods, the heat transfer area can be increased and power generation can be enhanced. In order to study the effect of outdoor radiation cooling on the thermoelectric performance of spiral heating, as well as the TEG performance output under different external environments and circuit loads, this paper proposes a new three-dimensional coupled numerical model of the spiral thermoelectric wristband system with multiple physical fields.

Institute of Electric Power Engineering, Czestochowa University of Technology, Armii Krajowej 17, 42-200 Czestochowa, Poland.

During the heat treatment of round steel bars, a heated charge in the form of a cylindrically formed bundle is placed in a furnace. This type of charge is a porous granular medium in which a complex heat flow occurs during heating. The following heat transfer mechanisms occur simultaneously in this medium: conduction in bars, conduction within the gas, thermal radiation between the surfaces of the bars, and contact conduction across the joints between the adjacent bars.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have drawn great attention as promising candidates for realizing next-generation printed thermoelectrics (TEs). However, the dispersion instability and resulting poor printability of CNTs have been major issues for their practical processing and device applications. In this work, we investigated the TE characteristics of water-processable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and single-walled CNT (SWCNT) composite.
