Much attention has been devoted to neurodegenerative diseases involving redox processes. This review comprises an update involving redox processes reported in the considerable literature in recent years. The mechanism involves reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress, usually in the brain. There are many examples including Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's, prions, Down's syndrome, ataxia, multiple sclerosis, Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, schizophrenia, and Tardive Dyskinesia. Evidence indicates a protective role for antioxidants, which may have clinical implications. A multifaceted approach to mode of action appears reasonable.

Background: Metabolic cardiomyopathy is characterized by structural and functional changes to the heart and interstitial fibrosis without coronary artery disease or hypertension. Inborn metabolic defects are a common cause of cardiomyopathy in children. There are more than 40 kinds of inborn metabolic defects that cause cardiomyopathy.

The sulfur species present in magmatic fluids affect the global redox cycle, the Earth's climate and the formation of some of the largest and most economic ore deposits of critical metals. However, the speciation of sulfur under conditions that are relevant for upper crustal magma reservoirs is unclear. Here we combine a prototype pressure vessel apparatus and Raman spectroscopy to determine sulfur speciation in arc magmatic fluid analogues in situ over a range of geologically relevant pressure-temperature-redox conditions.

The local structure plays a crucial role in oxygen redox reactions, which boosts the capacity of layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries. While studies on local structural ordering have primarily focused on the intra-layer ordering, there has been limited research on the inter-layer stacking for the layered cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. In this work, the impact of the intra-layer and inter-layer local structural regulation on anionic kinetics and the structure stability are explored through experimental analysis and theoretical calculations.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with high metal loadings are highly desirable but still challenging for large scale synthesis. Here we report a new technique named as dry-solid-electrochemical synthesis (DSES) for a general large-scale synthesis of SACs with high metal loadings in an energy-conservation and environment-friendly way. With it, a series of pure carbon-supported metal SACs (Platinum up to 35.

Pheophytin-a derivatives possessing plastoquinone and phylloquinone analogs in the peripheral 3-substituent were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reactions of a 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin as one of the chlorophyll-a derivatives with benzo- and naphthohydroquinones, respectively, and successive oxidation of the 1,4-dihydroxy-aryl groups in the resulting dehydration products. The 3-quinonylmethyl-chlorins exhibited ultraviolet-visible absorption and circular dichroism spectra in acetonitrile, which were composed of those of the starting 3-hydroxymethyl-chlorin and the corresponding methylated benzo- and naphthoquinones. No intramolecular interaction between the chlorin and quinone π-systems was observed in the solution owing to the methylene spacer.
