Rhodococcus sp. P1 utilizes phenol as the sole carbon and energy source via the beta-ketoadipate pathway. In batch cultivation, concentrations up to 2.8 g.l-1 phenol were degraded. The highest values for the specific growth rate of 0.32 h-1 were obtained at concentrations near 0.25 g.l-1. At higher concentrations, substrate inhibition was observed, characterized by increases in lag phase and decreasing growth rates. A mathematical expression was proposed to fit the kinetic pattern of phenol inhibition on the specific growth rate mu: [formula: see text] Nomenclature: K- Exponent of the inhibition function, Ks- Monod saturation constant, g.l-1, KI- Inhibition constant, g.l-1, S- Substrate concentration in culture broth, g.l-1, So- Initial substrate concentration, g.l-1, Y- Yield constant, g cell dry mass.g substrate-1, mu- Specific growth rate, h-1, mu max- Maximum growth rate, h-1.

This was an original article, and the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of bipolar transurethral plasma kinetic prostatectomy (TUPKP) on urodynamics and sexual function in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients. One hundred and four BPH patients were divided into a control group and an intervention group. The control group received transurethral resection of prostate, while the intervention group received TUKEP.

Comparative Evolutionary Epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 Delta and Omicron Variants in Kuwait.

Viruses

November 2024

Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health, P.O. Box 24923, Kuwait City 13110, Kuwait.

Continuous surveillance is critical for early intervention against emerging novel SARS-CoV-2 variants. Therefore, we investigated and compared the variant-specific evolutionary epidemiology of all the Delta and Omicron sequences collected between 2021 and 2023 in Kuwait. We used Bayesian phylodynamic models to reconstruct, trace, and compare the two variants' demographics, phylogeographic, and host characteristics in shaping their evolutionary epidemiology.

The paper presents a double-radio wireless multimedia sensor node (WMSN) with a camera on board, designed for plant proximal monitoring. Camera sensor nodes represent an effective solution to monitor the crop at the leaf or fruit scale, with details that cannot be retrieved with the same precision through satellites or unnamed aerial vehicles (UAVs). From the technological point of view, WMSNs are characterized by very different requirements, compared to standard wireless sensor nodes; in particular, the network data rate results in higher energy consumption and incompatibility with the usage of battery-powered devices.

Background/objectives: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is characterized by a high rate of both incidence and mortality, and its treatment outcomes are often affected by recurrence and drug resistance. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent programmed cell death mechanism triggered by lipid peroxidation, has recently gained attention as a potential therapeutic target. Graphene oxide (GO), known for its oxygen-containing functional groups, biocompatibility, and potential for functionalization, holds promise in cancer treatment.

A Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-Based Antimicrobial Peptide Delivery System with Enhanced Anticancer Activity and Low Systemic Toxicity.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Biological Resources and Genetic Engineering, College of Life Science and Technology, Xinjiang University, Urumqi 830046, China.

Background: The clinical efficacies of anticancer drugs are limited by non-selective toxic effects on healthy tissues and low bioavailability in tumor tissue. Therefore, the development of vehicles that can selectively deliver and release drugs at the tumor site is critical for further improvements in patient survival.

Methods: We prepared a CEC nano-drug delivery system, CEC@ZIF-8, with a zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a carrier, which can achieve the response of folate receptor (FR).
