High strength, low Young's modulus and good biocompatibility are desirable but difficult to simultaneously achieve in metallic implant materials for load bearing applications, and these impose significant challenges in material design. Here we report that a nano-grained β-Ti alloy prepared by high-pressure torsion exhibits remarkable mechanical and biological properties. The hardness and modulus of the nano-grained Ti alloy were respectively 23% higher and 34% lower than those of its coarse-grained counterpart. Fibroblast cell attachment and proliferation were enhanced, demonstrating good in vitro biocompatibility of the nano-grained Ti alloy, consistent with demonstrated increased nano-roughness on the nano-grained Ti alloy. Results suggest that the nano-grained β-Ti alloy may have significant application as an implant material in dental and orthopedic applications.

Light, strong, and radiation-tolerant materials are essential for advanced nuclear systems and aerospace applications. However, the comprehensive properties of current radiation-tolerant materials are far from being satisfactory in harsh operating environments. In this study, a high-throughput-designed NbVTaSi refractory eutectic medium entropy alloy realizes the controllable formation of the β-NbSi phase with a high content and has outstanding comprehensive properties, i.

Raman Signature of Stripe Domains in Monolayer WMoS Alloys.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania 16802, United States.

We study the Raman signature of stripe domains in monolayer WMoS alloys, characterized using experimental techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These stripe domains were found in star-shaped monolayer WS exhibiting a high concentration of molybdenum (Mo) atoms in its central region, and unique Raman peaks that were not previously reported. We attribute these peaks to the splitting of the original doubly degenerate E modes, arising from the lower symmetry of the W-Mo stripe domains.

We have found that surface superstructures made of "monolayer alloys" of Tl and Pb on Si(111), having giant Rashba effect, produce nonreciprocal spin-polarized photocurrent via circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) by obliquely shining circularly polarized near-infrared (IR) light. CPGE is here caused by the injection of in-plane spin into spin-split surface-state bands, which is observed only on Tl-Pb alloy layers but not on single-element Tl nor Pb layers. In the Tl-Pb monolayer alloys, despite their monatomic thickness, the magnitude of CPGE is comparable to or even larger than the cases of many other spin-split thin-film materials.

Composite coatings reinforced with varying mass fractions of SiC particles were successfully fabricated on 316 stainless steel substrates via laser cladding. The phase compositions, elemental distribution, microstructural characteristics, hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the composite coatings were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Vickers hardness testing, friction-wear testing and electrochemical methods. The coatings have no obvious pores, cracks or other defects.

Cr-MOF composited with facet-engineered bimetallic alloys for inducing photocatalytic conversion of CO to CH.

Coordination Chemistry Institute, State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing National Laboratory of Microstructures, Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Microstructures, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China.

The design of efficient photocatalysts is crucial for photocatalytic CO reduction. This study developed photocatalysts based on MIL-101(Cr) composited with a facet-engineered Pt/Pd nanoalloy (PPNA). Photocatalytic performance evaluations show that MIL-101(Cr) loaded with PPNA exposing {111} facets, namely M-A(111), exhibits a CO to CH conversion rate of 9.
