Published: June 2013

Objective: Careful analysis of the nephrogram is an integral component of the evaluation of the kidneys during CT urography. This is a review of the anatomy and physiology required to produce a normal nephrogram, as well as the basic principles affecting the interpretation of the nephrogram.

Conclusion: The eight abnormal nephrographic patterns will be illustrated and discussed. This review will enable the reader to recognize and understand the abnormal nephrographic patterns encountered in practice.

An MRI-based radiomics model to predict clear cell renal cell carcinoma growth rate classes in patients with von Hippel-Lindau syndrome.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

October 2022

Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Clinical Center (CC), National Institutes of Health, 10 Center Drive, Bethesda, MD, 20892-1109, USA.

Purpose: Upfront knowledge of tumor growth rates of clear cell renal cell carcinoma in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) patients can allow for a more personalized approach to either surveillance imaging frequency or surgical planning. In this study, we implement a machine learning algorithm utilizing radiomic features of renal tumors identified on baseline magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in VHL patients to predict the volumetric growth rate category of these tumors.

Materials And Methods: A total of 73 VHL patients with 173 pathologically confirmed Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCCs) underwent MRI at least at two different time points between 2015 and 2021.

Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Growth Correlates with Baseline Diffusion-weighted MRI in Von Hippel-Lindau Disease.

Radiology

June 2020

From the Radiology and Imaging Sciences, NIH Clinical Center (F.F., M.N., A.K.P., A.S., A.T., E.C.J., A.A.M.), and Urologic Oncology Branch, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute (M.W.B., W.M.L.), National Institutes of Health, 10 Center Dr, Bethesda, MD 20814.

Background Identification of markers to aid in understanding the growth kinetics of Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL)-associated clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) has the potential to allow individualization of patient care, thereby helping prevent unnecessary screening and optimizing intervention. Purpose To determine whether the degree of restricted diffusion at baseline MRI holds predictive potential for the growth rate of VHL-associated ccRCC. Materials and Methods Patients with VHL disease who underwent surgical resection of tumors between November 2014 and October 2017 were analyzed retrospectively in this HIPAA-compliant study.

Purpose: The aim of this pictorial essay is to demonstrate several cases where the diagnosis would have been difficult or impossible without the excretory phase image of CT urography.

Methods: A brief discussion of CT urography technique and dose reduction is followed by several cases illustrating the utility of CT urography.

Results: CT urography has become the primary imaging modality for evaluation of hematuria, as well as in the staging and surveillance of urinary tract malignancies.

Germline VHL gene variant in patients with von Hippel-Lindau disease does not predict renal tumor growth.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

October 2018

Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, 10 Center Dr. Bethesda, Bethesda, MD, 20814, USA.

Purpose: To determine whether the type of VHL gene pathogenic variant influences the growth rate or CT enhancement values of renal lesions in VHL patients.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-two VHL patients (19 male) were selected from a prospectively maintained imaging database for patients that underwent surgical tumor resection between 2014 and 2016. One hundred and eleven VHL lesions were marked for resection and pathology analysis.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma: identifying the gain of chromosome 20 on multiphasic MDCT.

Abdom Radiol (NY)

November 2016

The Department of Radiology, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Ronald Reagan-UCLA Medical Center, 757 Westwood Plaza, Suite 1638, Los Angeles, CA, 90095-7437, USA.

Purpose: To investigate whether multiphasic multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enhancement can help identify the gain of chromosome 20 in clear cell renal cell carcinomas (RCCs), a rare prognostically significant cytogenetic abnormality.

Methods: With the Institutional Review Board approval, we queried our institution's pathology database to derive a cohort of 52 cases of clear cell RCC with preoperative four-phase renal mass protocol MDCT and karyotypes of the resected specimens during a 10-year period. Each lesion was evaluated for absolute and relative (compared to contralateral normal renal cortex) attenuations in each phase.
