"Caged" gem-dithiol derivatives that release H2S upon light stimulation have been developed. This new class of H2S donors was proven, by various spectroscopic methods, to generate H2S in an aqueous/organic medium as well as in cell culture.

In this study, we explore the structural intricacies of cellulose, a polymer composed of glucose monomers arranged in a linear chain, primarily investigated through solid-state NMR techniques. Specifically, we employ low-field proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR) to delve into the diverse hydrogen atom types within the cellulose molecule. The low-field H-NMR technique allows us to discern these hydrogen atoms based on their distinct chemical shifts, providing valuable insights into the various functional groups present in cellulose.

We herein disclose a visible-light-induced synthesis of aryl esters through the cross-dehydrogenative coupling of aldehydes with phenols using BrCCl, in which phenolate functions as both a substrate and a photosensitizer. This transition-metal- and photocatalyst-free visible-light-induced esterification is suitable for a wide range of substrates and gives moderate to excellent yields (up to 95%). Mechanistic studies provided evidence of a self-propagating radical reaction involving homolytic cleavage of the aldehydic C-H bond and the formation of acyl bromides.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) metals exhibit remarkable light-absorbing property and unique catalytic activity, attracting significant attention in photocatalysts recently. However, the practical application of plasmonic nanometal is hindered by challenge of energetic electrons extraction and low selectivity. The energetic carriers generated in nanometal under illumination have extremely short lifetimes, leading to rapid energy loss.

A highly efficient Minisci reaction of pyrimidines with alkyl radical generated from visible-light-induced activation of simple C(sp)-H feedstocks such as (cyclo)alkanes, ethers, alcohols, esters, and amides is reported. A mechanistic study revealed that alkyl radical was generated via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) of C(sp)-H with dichloromethyl radical (·CHCl), which was generated by photoreduction of chloroform.

Borohydrides, known for ultrahigh hydrogen density, are promising hydrogen storage materials but typically require high operating temperatures due to their strong thermodynamic stability. Here we introduce a novel light-induced destabilization mechanism for hydrogen storage reaction of borohydrides under ambient conditions photogenerated vacancies in LiH. These vacancies thermodynamically destabilize B-H bonds through the spontaneous "strong adsorption" of BH groups, which trigger an asymmetric redistribution of electrons, enabling hydrogen release at near room temperature, approximately 300 °C lower than the corresponding thermal process.
