Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are caused in 95% of cases by bacteria--E. coli. UTIs usually are limited to the lower urinary tract, but it may also evolve into pyelonephritis and acute kidney injury.

Objectives: The aim of this study was the laboratory evaluation of renal function in an experimental model of ascending pyelonephritis caused by intravesical infusion of E. coli.

Material & Methods: In female Wistar rats UTI was induced by intravesical administration of E. coli suspension in a dose 10(5) c.f.u./ml (Group 1), and 10(7) c.f.u./ml (Group 2). On the 0,7th, 14th and 21st day of the experiment the animals underwent the procedures of collecting blood and urine samples.

Results: The results shown that in group 2 on the 7th and 14th day of the study the creatinine clearance decreased by 36%, and on 21th by 34%. The increase in serum uric acid concentration (micromol/l) in group 2 was observed on the 7th (229.75 +/- 79.05) and 21st day (98.5 +/- 11.33) with respect to day 0 (77.12 +/- 11.63). In group 2 on the 7th day of the experiment there was observed the increased levels of potassium (mmol/l) in serum (13.5 +/- 1.48) with respect to day 0 (7.74 +/- 0.88). In group 2 in the 7th (1.06 +/- 0.18) and 14th day (1.32 +/- 0.26) there was noted the decreased excretion of potassium in the urine (mmol/24h) with respect to day 0 (3.75 +/- 1.9). The decrease in serum sodium levels (mmol/l) in group 2 was recorded on 14th day (121.5 +/- 8.7) with respect to day 0 (131.62 +/- 4.07). Increased factional sodium excretion--FENa (%) was observed in group 2 on 14th day (0.25 +/- 0.06) with respect to day 0 (0.12 +/- 0.06).

Conclusions: Our main finding is that--independently of the amount bacteria present in urinary bladder--in this inflammatory model there occurs inevitably acute kidney injury, however higher bacteria amount depicts a very clear profile of laboratory parameters that point at the kidney impaired function.

Differential effects of fine particulate matter constituents on acute coronary syndrome onset.

Nat Commun

December 2024

School of Public Health, Key Lab of Public Health Safety of the Ministry of Education, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Fine particulate matter has been linked with acute coronary syndrome. Nevertheless, the key constituents remain unclear. Here, we conduct a nationwide case-crossover study in China during 2015-2021 to quantify the associations between fine particulate matter constituents (organic matter, black carbon, nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium) and acute coronary syndrome, and to identify the critical contributors.

On-the-spot spirometry & combined salbutamol & glycopyrronium reversibility testing in obstructive airway disease: A real-world appraisal.

Indian J Med Res

November 2024

Department of Biotechnology, and Dr BC Guha Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Calcutta, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

Background & objectives Spirometric glycopyrronium responsiveness, a new advent, needs to be examined at in terms of degree and frequency in different obstructive-airway diseases diagnosed in real world practise. Methods Serial and willing symptomatic affected individuals of suspected airway disease underwent a pragmatic post-consultation spirometry-protocol on the same day with salbutamol followed by glycopyrronium bromide. The diagnosis of asthma (FEV1-reversibility ≥ 200 ml + 12%), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (FEV1/FVC<0.

Introduction: Home birth is described as a delivery that takes place at home without the presence of a skilled birth attendant. In 2017, nearly 295,000 mothers died from various pregnancy and childbirth-related problems, accounting for approximately 810 maternal deaths per day. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the spatial distributions of home birth and associated factors in Ethiopia using the Performance Monitoring for Action Survey (PMAS) 2019) to get information that helps to take geographic-based interventions and can assist health planners and policymakers in developing particular measures to reduce home deliveries.

Introduction: Posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) has revolutionized the landscape of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (haplo-HCT), providing a pivotal therapeutic option for patients with hematological malignancies who lack an HLA-matched donor.

Methods: In this retrospective analysis involving 54 adult patients undergoing PTCy-based haplo-HCT, we evaluated the impact of inhibitory killer immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR)/HLA mismatch, alongside patient, donor, and transplant factors, on clinical outcomes within a homogeneous cohort characterized by a myeloablative conditioning regimen and bone marrow graft.

Results: With a median follow-up of 73.
