A heterologous radioreceptor assay was developed to follow the purification of an EGF-like polypeptide from bovine kidney. Purification of the growth factor was facilitated by the use of a novel affinity column using fixed A431 cells attached to sephadex beads. The mol. wt. of the purified EGF-LP was estimated to be 5480 from the amino acid composition. The purified EGF-like polypeptide stimulated the proliferation of bovine mammary epithelial cells and appeared to be equipotent to mouse EGF. Available evidence suggests that the purified molecule is distinct from bovine TGF-alpha.

Marine and terrestrial organisms often utilise EGF/EGF-like domains in wet adhesives, yet their roles in adhesion remain unclear. Here, we investigate the Barbatia virescense byssal system and uncover an oxidation-independent, reversible, and robust adhesion mechanism where EGF/EGF-like domain tandem repetitions in adhesive proteins bind robustly to GlcNAc-based biopolymer. EGF/EGF-like-domain-containing proteins demonstrate over three-fold superior underwater adhesion to chitosan compared to the well-known strongest wet-adhesive proteins, mefp-5, and suckerin, when adhering to mica in an surface forces apparatus-based measurement.

Membranous nephropathy (MN) is an autoimmune disease that is caused by the production of autoantibody against glomerular podocyte antigens by immune cells due to the lack of self-tolerance mechanisms. Similar to many autoimmune diseases, the pathogenesis of MN is still vague and many experiments are being conducted to detect the antigens and genetic reasons for MN illness. Recently, new antigens, such as exotosin 1/exotosin 2, neural EGF-like-1, semaphorin 3B, and protocadherin 7 have been identified in MN patients who did not have presence of antiphospholipase A2 receptor antigen.

MicroRNAs, including the tumor-suppressor miR-126 and the oncogene miR-221, regulate tumor formation and growth in colitis-associated cancer (CAC) and colorectal cancer (CRC). This study explores the impact of the epithelial cytokine heparin-binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) and its receptor epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) on the pathogenesis of CAC and CRC, particularly in the regulation of microRNA-driven tumor growth and protease expression. In murine models of CRC and CAC, lack of miR-126 and elevated miR-221 expression in colonic tissues enhanced tumor formation and growth.

Itch is a prominent symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the underlying mechanism remains complex and has not yet been fully elucidated. Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor A3 (MrgprA3) has emerged attention as a marker of primary sensory neurons that specifically transmit itch signals; however, its involvement in AD-related itch has not been extensively explored.
