Mild to moderate skew in errors can substantially impact regression mixture model results; one approach for overcoming this includes transforming the outcome into an ordered categorical variable and using a polytomous regression mixture model. This is effective for retaining differential effects in the population; however, bias in parameter estimates and model fit warrant further examination of this approach at higher levels of skew. The current study used Monte Carlo simulations; three thousand observations were drawn from each of two subpopulations differing in the effect of X on Y. Five hundred simulations were performed in each of the ten scenarios varying in levels of skew in one or both classes. Model comparison criteria supported the accurate two class model, preserving the differential effects, while parameter estimates were notably biased. The appropriate number of effects can be captured with this approach but we suggest caution when interpreting the magnitude of the effects.

Association between mixed exposure of non-persistent pesticides and liver fibrosis in the general US population: NHANES 2013-2016.

Key Laboratory of Environmental Medicine Engineering, Ministry of Education, School of Public Health, Southeast University, Nanjing 210009, PR China. Electronic address:

People are continually and simultaneously exposed to various non-persistent pesticides as these chemicals are ubiquitously distributed in the environment. Toxicological studies have indicated the associations between non-persistent pesticides and liver fibrosis in vitro and in vivo. However, epidemical study on the deleterious effect of non-persistent pesticides on the risk of liver fibrosis is rather limited.

Multi-metal mixture exposure and cognitive function in urban older adults: The mediation effects of thyroid hormones.

Ecotoxicol Environ Saf

January 2025

Department of Sanitary Chemistry, School of Public Health, Guangxi Medical University, Nanning 530021, China; Guangxi Key Laboratory of Environmental Exposomics and Entire Lifecycle Health, Guilin Medical University, China. Electronic address:

The existing studies on the association between multi-metal mixture exposure and cognitive function in the older adults are limited and controversial, with no studies considering the mediating effect of thyroid hormones on the connection between them. This study of 441 urban older adults assessed 21 urinary metal levels and cognitive function using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Urinary metal levels were measured via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and thyroid hormones levels were obtained from medical records.

The fast detection of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) adulteration with poorer quality and lower price vegetable oils is important for the protection of consumers and the market of olive oil from fraudulent activities, the latter exhibiting an increasing trend worldwide during the last few years. In this work, two optical spectroscopic techniques, namely, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and UV-Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, are employed and are assessed for EVOO adulteration detection, using the same set of olive oil samples. In total, 184 samples were studied, including 40 EVOOs and 144 binary mixtures with pomace, soybean, corn, and sunflower oils, at various concentrations (ranging from 10 to 90% /).

Background: We evaluated air emissions of industrial compounds, many of which have carcinogenic or endocrine disrupting properties, in relation to breast cancer incidence.

Methods: Using the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory, we quantified air emissions of 28 compounds near Sister Study participants' residences during the 10 years leading up to study enrollment (2003-2006; n=46,150). We used Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations of residential emission levels of single pollutants with incident breast cancer.

Neonicotinoids exposure was found to induce thyroid dysfunction. However, there lack of direct evidence between neonicotinoids exposure and thyroid hormone (TH) disruption in population study, especially in children, which limits the understanding on their health hazard. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study on children of a rural area in South China (n = 88), and analyzed urinary ten neonicotinoids (including metabolites), serum TH, thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels.
