Endothelial colony-forming cells (ECFCs) are decreased in the cord blood of preterm infants with moderate-to-severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia. We quantified ECFCs from infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a neonatal disorder with severe lung hypoplasia. Unlike newborns who develop bronchopulmonary dysplasia, those with congenital diaphragmatic hernia had increased and highly-proliferative cord blood ECFCs.

Venous Endothelial Cell Transcriptomic Profiling Implicates METAP1 in Preeclampsia.

Circ Res

December 2024

Cardiovascular Research Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. (C.C., P.X., Z.Y., Y.S., E.S.L., J.D.R., M.C.H.).

Background: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy characterized by systemic endothelial dysfunction. The pathophysiology of preeclampsia remains incompletely understood. This study used human venous endothelial cell (EC) transcriptional profiling to investigate potential novel mechanisms underlying EC dysfunction in preeclampsia.

Background: Cholesterol is essential for pregnant women to maintain maternal health and fetal support development. This study aimed to assess the cholesterol intake of women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and to explore its effects on blood glucose and pregnancy outcomes.

Methods: This prospective cohort study collected dietary data using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) administered during the 24-30 gestational weeks (first survey) and the 34-42 gestational weeks (second survey).

December 2024

Maternity and Child Health Care of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Nanning, China.

Objective: to evaluate the research status and development hotspots of fetal α-thalassemia by quantitatively analyzing the diagnostic status, key areas, related management measures and prospects of the disease by bibliometrics.

Methods: The global literature on fetal α-thalassemia and severe α-thalassemia from 2009-2023 in the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) was visually analyzed by VOSviewer and CiteSpace.

Results: (1) The examination of the quantity of publications concerning fetal α-thalassemia indicates a rising tendency prior to 2018, followed by a decrease after 2018.

Targeting oxidative stress in preeclampsia.

Hypertens Pregnancy

December 2025

School of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Preeclampsia is a complex condition characterized by elevated blood pressure and organ damage involving kidneys or liver, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality for both the mother and the fetus. Increasing evidence suggests that oxidative stress, often caused by mitochondrial dysfunction within fetal trophoblast cells may play a major role in the development and progression of preeclampsia. Oxidative stress occurs as a result of an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the capacity of antioxidant defenses, which can lead to placental cellular damage and endothelial cell dysfunction.
