The extensive rubella epidemic which occurred in Israel in 1972, had a considerable impact on the population at risk: 1. The spread of rubella infection into the community strongly influenced the extent of legal abortions: (a) 1 x 5 as many abortions for all causes were recorded in the epidemic year, as compared to the average number recorded in the three-year pre-epidemic period; (b) about 20 per cent of all abortions were associated with a history of exposure to rubella in the first months of pregnancy. 2. The incidence of congenital rubella diagnosed up to six months from birth varies greatly: the attack rate was 11.8 per thousand live births in an area inhabited by a population whose religious belief generally prevented the practice of abortions, as opposed to a significantly lower rate of 1 x 7 per thousand in a population with a liberal approach to abortions. 3. Ten months after the epidemic subsided, the percentage of female subjects of childbearing age lacking rubella HI antibody was very similar to that found in the same age group, several years before the epidemic.

Viral infections in low-income countries such as Brazil pose a significant challenge for medical authorities, with epidemics such as Zika virus infection having lasting effects. The increase in microcephaly among newborns has prompted investigations into the association between Zika virus and this congenital syndrome. The severity and prevalence of microcephaly led to the declaration of national and international emergencies.

Rubella virus-associated granulomas commonly occur in immunocompromised individuals, exhibiting a diverse range of clinical presentations. These manifestations can vary from predominantly superficial cutaneous plaques or nonulcerative nodules to more severe deep ulcerative lesions, often accompanied by extensive necrosis and significant tissue destruction. TAP1 deficiency, an exceedingly rare primary immune-deficiency disorder, presents with severe chronic sino-pulmonary infection and cutaneous granulomas.

It is unclear whether patients with basal ganglia calcifications (BGC) should undergo infectious disease testing as part of their diagnostic work-up. We investigated the occurrence of possibly associated infections in patients with BGC diagnosed with Fahr's disease or syndrome and consecutively performed a systematic review of published infectious diseases associated with BGC. In a cross-sectional study, we evaluated infections in non-immunocompromised patients aged ≥ 18 years with BGC in the Netherlands, who were diagnosed with Fahr's disease or syndrome after an extensive multidisciplinary diagnostic work-up.
