Multiplets at zero magnetic field: the geometry of zero-field NMR.

For liquid samples at Earth's field or below, nuclear-spin motion within scalar-coupled networks yields multiplets as a spectroscopic signature. In weak fields, the structure of the multiplets depends on the magnitude of the Zeeman interaction relative to the scalar couplings; in Earth's field, for example, heteronuclear couplings are truncated by fast precession at distinct Larmor frequencies. At zero field, weak scalar couplings are truncated by the relatively fast evolution associated with strong scalar couplings, and the truncated interactions can be described geometrically. When the spin system contains a strongly coupled subsystem A, an average over the fast evolution occurring within the subsystem projects each strongly coupled spin onto FA, the summed angular momentum of the spins in A. Weakly coupled spins effectively interact with FA, and the coupling constants for the truncated interactions are found by evaluating projections. We provide a formal description of zero-field spin systems with truncated scalar couplings while also emphasizing visualization based on a geometric model. The theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental spectra that exhibit second-order shifts and splittings.

Transmission matrix measurements of multimode fibers are now routinely performed in numerous laboratories, enabling control of the electric field at the distal end of the fiber and paving the way for the potential application to ultrathin medical endoscopes with high resolution. The same concepts are applicable to other areas, such as space division multiplexing, targeted power delivery, fiber laser performance, and the general study of the mode coupling properties of the fiber. However, the process of building an experimental setup and developing the supporting code to measure the fiber's transmission matrix remains challenging and time consuming, with full details on experimental design, data collection, and supporting algorithms spread over multiple papers or lacking in detail.

Conformational Space of 3-Chloropropionic Acid in Gas Phase Explored by Rotational Spectroscopy.

J Phys Chem A

December 2024

Departamento de Química Física y Química Inorgánica, Facultad de Ciencias─I.U. CINQUIMA, Paseo de Belén, 7, 47011 Valladolid, Spain.

The conformational space of 3-chloropropionic acid has been studied under the isolated conditions of a supersonic expansion using Stark-modulated free-jet absorption millimeter-wave and centimeter-wave chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy techniques. The rotational spectra originating from the three most stable conformers including Cl and Cl isotopologues were observed in both experiments using helium expansion while a partial conformational relaxation involving skeletal rearrangements takes place in an argon expansion. The rotational parameters, geometries, and energy order were determined from the experiment, allowing a comparison with quantum chemical predictions.

P , T -odd effects in YbCu, YbAg, and YbAu.

J Chem Phys

December 2024

Van Swinderen Institute for Particle Physics and Gravity, University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 4, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands.

In this work, the molecular enhancement factors of the P,T-odd interactions involving the electron electric dipole moment (Wd) and the scalar-pseudoscalar nucleon-electron couplings (Ws) are computed for the ground state of the bimetallic molecules YbCu, YbAg, and YbAu. These systems offer a promising avenue for creating cold molecules by associating laser-cooled atoms. The relativistic coupled-cluster approach is used in the calculations, and a thorough uncertainty analysis is performed to give accurate and reliable uncertainties to the obtained values.

The Tolman-Ehrenfest criterion of thermal equilibrium in scalar-tensor gravity.

The Tolman-Ehrenfest criterion for the thermal equilibrium of a fluid at rest in a static general-relativistic geometry is generalized to scalar-tensor gravity. Surprisingly, the gravitational scalar field, which fixes the strength of the effective gravitational coupling, does not play a role in determining thermal equilibrium. As a result, heat does not sink more in a gravitational field where gravity is stronger.
