Concentrations of particulate emissions from a quarry located in hilly terrain were calculated by two common atmospheric dispersion models, AERMOD and CALPUFF. Evaluation of these models for emissions from quarries/open pit mines that are located in complex topography is missing from the literature. Due to severe uncertainties in the input parameters, numerous scenarios were simulated and model sensitivity was studied. Model results were compared among themselves, and to measured total suspended particulate (TSP). For a wide range of meteorological and topographical conditions studied, AERMOD predictions were in a better agreement with the measurements than those obtained by CALPUFF. The use of AERMOD's "Open pit" tool seems unnecessary when accurate digital topographic data are available. Onsite meteorological data are shown to be crucial for reliable dispersion calculations in complex terrain.

Accurate meteorological fields and applicable air quality models are important ways to optimize air pollution simulations. To improve the accuracy of winter air pollution models in the Sichuan basin, we conducted a meteorological field simulation using 25 sets of parameterized scheme combinations in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. Based on the optimal parameters, the air pollution levels were simulated using AERMOD and CALPUFF models in a local large steel plant, and the data were verified by comparing the data from four National Ambient Air Monitoring Stations (NAAMS).

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is volatile and highly toxic with acute and chronic effects on humans. Gaseous HCN enters the atmosphere from natural processes or industrial activities, which lead to human exposure. Effective intervention in cases of HCN inhalation requires an efficient diagnostic tool.

Dust pollution is a complex problem of growing interest because of its environmental, health, economic and political impact. Environmental impact assessment methods for dust pollution management are often based on the simulation of dust dispersion, which requires a precise characterization of the source term and of the source parameters. The source term model should be as simple and as accurate as possible and requires low time consumption in order to be easily connected to a more complex algorithm for the dispersion calculations.

In this study, concentration of SO2 from a gas refinery located in complex terrain was calculated by the steady-state, AERMOD model, and nonsteady-state CALPUFF model. First, in four seasons, SO2 concentrations emitted from 16 refinery stacks, in nine receptors, were obtained by field measurements, and then the performance of both models was evaluated. Then, the simulated results for SO2 ambient concentrations made by each model were compared with the results of the observed concentrations, and model results were compared among themselves.
