Eco-Friendly Fabrication of FeS QD-Chitosan Biopolymer Composites: Green Synthetic Approach.

Biopolymers

March 2025

Department of Chemistry, School of Chemical and Physical Sciences, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, India.

In this paper, we offer a unique green synthetic approach for producing iron sulfide quantum dots (FeS QD)-chitosan composites using gel chemistry. The technique uses the environmental features of chitosan, a biocompatible and biodegradable polysaccharide, and the excellent electrical properties of FeS QDs. By sustainable chemistry principles, the synthesis process is carried out under gentle settings, using aqueous solutions and avoiding hazardous solvents and strong chemicals.

Sodium-storage performance of pyrite FeS is greatly improved by constructing various FeS-based nanostructures to optimize its ion-transport kinetics and structural stability. However, less attention has been paid to rapid capacity degradation and electrode failure caused by the irreversible phase-transition of intermediate NaFeS to FeS and polysulfides dissolution upon cycling. Under the guidance of theoretical calculations, coupling FeS nanoparticles with honeycomb-like nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) nanosheet supported single-atom manganese (SAs Mn) catalyst (FeS/SAs Mn@NC) via atomic-interface engineering is proposed to address above challenge.

Recently, pyrite iron disulfide (FeS) has emerged as a promising anode candidate for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity, affordability, non-toxicity and abundant resource in nature. However, the utilization of FeS still confronts the challenges of inferior rate capability and cycling instability for sodium storage, stemming from its low electronic conductivity and substantial volume changes during cycling. Herein, to address these obstacles, NiS/FeS binary nanoparticles encapsulated within a network of interconnected N-doped porous carbon framework (NiS/FeS@NPC) are prepared by a successive solid-state ball milling, carbonization and sulfurization strategy with coordination complex of nickel iron Prussian blue analogue (NiFe-PBA) as precursor.

Environmental Health Engineering Lecturer, Alifard (SANICH) Institute of Applied Nscience and Technology, Hashtgerd, Alborz, Iran; Department of Environmental Health Engineering, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Health Assistant Department, South Tehran Health Center, Tehran, Iran. Electronic address:

The catalytic performance of nano-FeS in the sonoelectrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and ozone to remove aspirin (ASP) was studied for the first time. The crystal structure and Fe bonds in the catalyst were confirmed through XRD and FTIR analysis. Within 30 min, ASP (TOC) was removed by 99.

The extracellular degradation of antibiotics facilitated by bio-nanoparticles is significant in the field of waste valorization. Among different bio-nanoparticles, bio-FeS nanoparticles stand out for their convenient and cost-effective synthesis. Nevertheless, there is a lack of understanding regarding the extracellular degradation of pollutants driven by bio-FeS nanoparticles.
