This manuscript reports on the synthesis, the photophysical study and the electroluminescent properties of a series of heteroleptic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes based on 2,5-diaryl-pyridines as C^N cyclometalating ligands and acetylacetonate as ancillary ligand. The complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, ESI-MS, multinuclear NMR, TGA and electrochemistry. Their optical properties were investigated by UV-Vis and photoluminescence. DFT and TD-DFT calculations provided further insights into the effects of the 5-aryl substitution on the electronic and photophysical properties of the new complexes. The presence of suitable π-extended ligands exerts a beneficial effect on the performances of the corresponding solution-processed light-emitting diodes, leading to a maximum brightness of 10,620 cd m(-2) at a current efficiency of 10.0 cd A(-1).

Background: Triazoles are a class of aza-heterocycles with broad spectrum of biological importance. The synthetic tunability of the triazole moiety allows for the development of new pharmacophores with applications as drugs to contend with the burden of cancer.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to develop a series of N-aryltriazole and N-acridinyltriazole molecular hybrids and evaluate their potential as anticancer agents.

The activation of halogen bonding by the substitution of the pentafluoro-λ-sulfanyl (SF) group was studied using a series of SF-substituted iodobenzenes. The simulated electrostatic potential values of SF-substituted iodobenzenes, the ab initio molecular orbital calculations of intermolecular interactions of SF-substituted iodobenzenes with pyridine, and the C-NMR titration experiments of SF-substituted iodobenzenes in the presence of pyridine or tetra (-butyl) ammonium chloride (TBAC) indicated the obvious activation of halogen bonding, although this was highly dependent on the position of SF-substitution on the benzene ring. It was found that 3,5-bis-SF-iodobenzene was the most effective halogen bond donor, followed by -SF-substituted iodobenzene, while the - and -SF substitutions did not activate the halogen bonding of iodobenzenes.

Novel 5-aryl indanones, inden-1-one oximes, and inden-1-ols were synthesized and evaluated as progesterone receptor (PR) modulators using the T47D cell alkaline phosphatase assay. Both PR agonists and antagonists were achieved with appropriate 3- and 5-substitution from indanones and inden-1-ols while inden-1-one oximes provided only PR antagonists. Several compounds such as 10 and 11 demonstrated potent in vitro PR agonist potency similar to that of steroidal progesterone (1).

A straightforward and cost-effective synthesis of 5-aryl-3-alkylsulfonyl-phenols by a sequential scaffold derivatization strategy has been developed. The procedure is suitable for parallel synthesis of small libraries around the biphenyl privileged core having an unusual 1,3,5-substitution pattern. The synthesis is exemplified by a pilot library of 30 compounds.
