Background: End-stage renal disease patients experience increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Heart-artery interaction may be shifted, impacting blood pressure lability, and exercise tolerance. The coupling ratio consists of the ratio of indexed arterial elastance (EaI, arterial load) to ElvI, a measure of cardiac contractility or stiffness. Our purpose was to explore the relationship between elastances and functional capacity. We hypothesized that arterial stiffness (central pulse wave velocity, PWV) and elastances would be correlated to shuttle walk time.

Methods: We used applanation tonometry, ultrasonography, and a shuttle walk test to evaluate our hypothesis. Spearman's correlations were used to assess relationships between variables. Block regression was also performed.

Results: Forty-two subjects on maintenance hemodialysis participated. Average age=44±5 years, body surface area=2.01 kg/m(2). Mean EaI=4.45 and mean ElvI=6.89; the coupling ratio=0.82. Mean aortic pulse pressure=51 mmHg and PWV=9.6 m/s. PWV(r=-0.385) and EaI (r=-0.424) were significantly and inversely related to walking time while stroke volume index (SVI) was positively correlated to shuttle walk time (r=0.337), p<0.05 for all.

Conclusions: We conclude that, like other clinical populations, both arterial and heart function predict walking ability and represent potential targets for intervention; arterial stiffness and SVI are strongly related to shuttle walk time in patients with ESRD.

Effects of a Tailored Home-Based Exercise Program, "KidMove", on Children with Cystic Fibrosis: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Healthcare (Basel)

December 2024

Respiratory Research and Rehabilitation Laboratory (Lab3R), School of Health Sciences (ESSUA) and Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED), University of Aveiro, Agras do Crasto-Campus Universitário de Santiago, Building 30, 3810-193 Aveiro, Portugal.

Exercise for children with cystic fibrosis leads to well-known health benefits. However, maintaining regular activity is challenging due to the daily demands of academics, clinical care, and family tasks. Home-based exercise programs offer a more adaptable alternative, fitting into family schedules.

Background: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) represents an important therapeutic target to prevent future cognitive decline associated with aging as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. One such therapy is the “dual‐task” exergaming with concurrent aerobic exercise (AEx) and cognitive training. The primary aim of this Stage IB randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to test the preliminary effects of a dual‐task exergaming telerehabilitation intervention on cognition and aerobic fitness, in comparison to AEx only and attention control (stretching) in older adults with SCD

Method: This RCT randomized 39 participants on a 2:1:1 allocation ratio to supervised exergame (Figure 1) (n = 20), AEx (n = 11), and stretching (n = 8), 3 times a week for 12 weeks.

BACKGROUNDAlthough physical activity is an important outcome in patients with chronic respiratory disease, it has not been characterised in those with non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). This study aimed to evaluate physical activity and its associated factors in patients with NTM-PD.METHODSThis prospective observational study measured daily step counts using an accelerometer to assess physical activity (steps per day).

Incremental shuttle walking test for calf muscle oxygenation assessment in peripheral arterial disease: a cross-sectional study.

Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Sciences, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Avenida Presidente Antônio Carlos, 6627 - Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, CEP 31270-901, MG, Brazil.

People with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and intermittent claudication (IC) experience impaired walking due to an imbalance between muscle oxygen supply and demand during exercise. Studies with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during treadmill tests reveal notable tissue deoxygenation with slow recovery. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare behavior of calf muscle oxygenation during the incremental shuttle walking test (ISWT) with a continuous treadmill test (3.

Backgrounds: Currently, there is a lack of evidence of prehabilitation during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) to prevent pneumonia of older patients. This study aimed to investigate the association of preoperative physical fitness after NAC with post-esophagectomy pneumonia in older patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (LAEC).

Methods: This single-center exploratory prospective cohort study included 80 patients aged ≥ 65 years with LAEC scheduled for curative esophagectomy after NAC between 2021 and 2023.
