Phytochemical investigation of the n-BuOH-soluble fraction of the EtOH extract of the herbaceous stems of Ephedra sinica, which is known as Ephedrae Herba in Traditional Chinese Medicine, led to the isolation and identification of 12 A-type proanthocyanidins, containing five dimers, two trimers and five tetramers [i.e., (+)-epigallocatechin-(2α→O→7,4α→8)-(-)-catechin, named ephedrannin D₁, a dimer; epigallocatechin-(2α→O→7,4α→8)-epigallocatechin-(4α→8)-catechin (ephedrannin Tr₁), a trimer; and epigallocatechin-(2α→O→7,4α→8)-epigallocatechin-(4α→8)-epigallocatechin-(2α→O→7,4α→8)-gallocatechin, named ephedrannin Te1, a tetramer). Tetramers composed of gallocatechin are reported for the first time in Ephedraceae. Catechin, epicatechin, gallocatechin, epigallocatechin and four known dimers were also isolated. The structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis. The absolute configurations of the 4α linkages, which were confirmed by NOESY and CD experiments, are the outstanding characteristic of most of these isolated A-type proanthocyanidins. The antimicrobial activities of these compounds were tested by measuring the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) against bacteria (both Gram positive and Gram negative) and fungi, and were found to be in the range of 0.00515-1.38 mM. Compounds 6, 8, 10 and 11 exhibited moderate antimicrobial activities against Canidia albicans.

To date, quantitative analysis of proanthocyanidin (PAC) containing materials including plant extracts and fractions depends on colorimetric assays or phloroglucinolysis/thiolysis combined with UV-HPLC analysis. Such assays are of limited accuracy, particularly lack specificity, require extensive sample preparation and degradation, and need appropriate physical reference standards. To address this analytical challenge and toward our broader goal of developing new plant-sourced biomaterials that chemically and mechanically modulate the properties of dental tissue for clinical interventions, we have characterized 12 different PAC DESIGNER (Depletion and Enrichment of Select Ingredients Generating Normalized Extract Resources) materials.

This study systematically investigated the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical induced oxidation of all dimeric C4-C8 linked B-type procyanidins (PCs) B1-B4 to maximise the formation of the oxidation products using a Design of Experiments (DoE) approach. The C4-C8 linked B1 and B2 formed the A1 () and A2 () (/ 575 [M-H]) with an ether bridge between C2u-O-C7t as expected. Interestingly, the oxidation of the C4-C8 linked dimers B3 and B4 yielded for each two main oxidation products with / 575 [M-H].

The angular dependence of the indirect short-range spin-spin coupling constants (SSCC), the geminal , , and in A-type dimeric proanthocyanidin, was investigated using density functional theory. We studied the rotation of ring B around the bond. Therefore, we calculated hyperconjugative charge transfers and bond polarizations within the natural bond orbital (NBO) approach, performing a topological study based on Bader's theory, AIM (atoms in molecules), and analyzing the angular dependence of AIM/NBO parameters.

Repeated urinary tract infections affect many people worldwide. A potential strategy to reduce the incidence of these infections is to consume probiotics and cranberry fruit regularly. In this context, this study aims to prepare fermented milk with Lactobacillus acidophilus La-5 added with concentrated cranberry juice in two concentrations (5 and 10 %, corresponding to C1 and C2 samples, respectively) and evaluate different technological aspects of the samples after production and during storage, and comparing with the control sample (C).
