The inclusion of two sources of buffered vinegar and sodium dodecyl sulfate plus levulinic acid were studied as interventions for Salmonella Typhimurium and for their effect on shelf-life and sensory characteristics of ground beef. For the Salmonella challenge, beef trimmings (80/20) were inoculated then treated with 2% (w/v) liquid buffered vinegar (LVIN), 2.5% (w/w) powdered buffered vinegar (PVIN), a solution containing 1.0% levulinic acid plus 0.1% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDLA) at 10% (w/v), or had no intervention applied (CNT). The same trim source and production methods were followed during production of patties for shelf-life and sensory testing without inoculation. SDLA patties had the largest reduction (P<0.05; 0.70 log CFU/g) of Salmonella. However, LVIN and PVIN had the least (P<0.05) psychrotrophic growth. SDLA patties had more purge (P<0.05) and lower (P<0.05) subjective color scores. There were not large differences in sensory characteristics, except PVIN exhibited stronger off-flavor (P<0.05).

Collagen, a critical biomaterial with wide applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and medical industries, can be sourced sustainably from fish scales. This study optimizes the extraction of collagen using Tris-Glycine buffer from fish scales via the Taguchi method. Various extraction parameters-buffer concentration, temperature, pH, and time-were evaluated to identify optimal conditions.

A new sample preparation and determination method, including HPLC-DAD analysis after Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction (MSPE), was developed to monitor the trace amounts of two types of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Ibuprofen (IBP) and Ketoprofen (KP). In the proposed method, IBP and KP analytes were extracted from newly synthesized magnetic-based sorbent in a pH 4.0 buffer medium and enriched by desorbing again with ethanol to a smaller volume before chromatographic determinations.

To reduce the ammonia loss during the trough composting process and the problem of low initial pH of the compost due to one-time addition of organic acids. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of buffering the pH of the compost and controlling the ammonia emission through the addition of dilute acetic acid sprayed on the surface of the compost pile after several pile-turnings in the trough composting process. The results showed that the spraying of acetic acid did not have a significant difference in the effect on the initial pH and maintained a slightly alkaline environment throughout the composting process, which led to an increase in the degradation rate of 58.

In addition to the basic and main parts of hospital equipment, 316 L stainless steel is widely utilized in futures such as nails and screws, wires and medical bone clips, dental implants, heart springs (stents), needles, surgical scissors, etc. In the present study, the electrophoretic deposition of a composite based on chitosan (CS), gelatin, nano and microparticles of hydroxyapatite on a 316 L stainless steel substrate was investigated. Hydroxyapatite particles are added to it due to the ossification abilities of steel and due to an enhanced adhesion and bone production, CS and biocompatible gelatin polymer particles were also added to hydroxyapatite.

Two novel membranes based on collagen and two polyphenols, taxifolin pentaglutarate (TfG5) and a conjugate of taxifolin with glyoxylic acid (DfTf), were prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy examination confirmed the preservation of the triple helical structure of collagen. A scanning electron microscopy study showed that both materials had a porous structure.
