L-serinium semi-maleate, (I), and DL-serinium semi-maleate, (II), both C3H8NO3(+)·C4H3O4(-), provide the first example of chiral and racemic anhydrous serine salts with the same organic anion. A comparison of their crystal structures with each other, with the structures of the pure components (L-serine polymorphs, DL-serine and maleic acid) and with other amino acid maleates is important for understanding the formation of the crystal structures, their response to variations in temperature and pressure, and structure-property relationships. As in other known crystal structures of amino acid maleates, there are no direct links between the semi-maleate anions in the two new structures. The serinium cations have different conformations in (I) and (II). In (I), they are linked into infinite chains via hydrogen bonds between carboxylic acid and hydroxy groups. In (II), there are no such chains formed by the serinium cations. In both (I) and (II), there are C2(2)(12) chains consisting of alternating semi-maleate anions and serinium cations. Two types of such chains are present in (I) and (II), termed C2(2)(12) and C2(2)(12)'. In (I), these chains, lying in the same plane, are further linked to each other via hydrogen bonds, whereas in (II) they are not.

Nickel complexes are a potential candidate for antibacterial and antifungal activity. A new Ni (II) complex, bis(2-methoxy-6-{[(2-methylpropyl)imino]methyl}phenolato)nickel (II) (2), was synthesised by reacting, bis(3-methoxy-salicylaldehyde)nickel (II) (1) with isobutylamine. It was characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction (ScXRD), UV-Vis, NMR, IR, mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetry (TG) to study its structure and physico-chemical properties.

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), an experimental and theoretical study of changes in the electronic structure (dispersion dependencies) and corresponding modification of the energy band gap at the Dirac point (DP) for topological insulator (TI) [Formula: see text] have been carried out with gradual replacement of magnetic Mn atoms by non-magnetic Ge atoms when concentration of the latter was varied from 10% to 75%. It was shown that when Ge concentration increases, the bulk band gap decreases and reaches zero plateau in the concentration range of 45-60% while trivial surface states (TrSS) are present and exhibit an energy splitting of 100 and 70 meV in different types of measurements. It was also shown that TSS disappear from the measured band dispersions at a Ge concentration of about 40%.

The preparation of new phosphor with outstanding luminescent properties for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) is consistently a challenging. Here in the present study, A novel white-emitting chloropatite phosphor Ca(PO)Cl:Eu was synthesized via the pechini sol gel synthesis with citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) acid as a fuel at 850 °C systematically investigating the impact of doping concentration and synthesis temperature on both photoluminescence properties and crystal phase. The structural characteristics and crystalline nature of the prepared sample were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra.

Reactive oxygen species exacerbate nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by oxidizing macromolecules; yet how they promote NASH remains poorly understood. Here, we show that peroxidase activity of global hepatic peroxiredoxin (PRDX) is significantly decreased in NASH, and palmitic acid (PA) binds to PRDX1 and inhibits its peroxidase activity. Using three genetic models, we demonstrate that hepatic PRDX1 protects against NASH in male mice.

Post-translational modification of proteins is a crucial biological reaction that regulates protein functions by altering molecular properties. The specific detection of such modifications in proteins has made significant contributions to molecular biology research and holds potential for future drug development applications. In HIV research, for example, tyrosine sulfation at the N-terminus of C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) is considered to significantly enhance HIV infection efficiency.
