Echinococcosis is endemic in many parts of the world. Although echinococcosis can be present in all parts of the human body, urinary tract involvement develops in only 2-4% of all cases, and isolated renal cysts are extremely rare. There are no specific clinical symptoms or signs that will reliably confirm the diagnosis of renal echinococcosis. Routine blood tests are generally normal except for eosinophilia, which is found in only 20% of the cases. Radiological studies have a more important place in the preoperative diagnosis of renal hydatic disease. However, there is no specific sign on plain urography or intravenous urography, and ultrasound or computed tomography cannot always show a echinococcosis as a specific lesion. Echinococcosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions in solid organs or other anatomic sites, especially in endemic countries. We presented a patient with isolated giant renal cystic echinococcosis mimicking a complicated cyst who was treated successfully with nephrectomy.

Therapeutic Potential of Ketogenic Interventions for Autosomal-Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review.

Nutrients

December 2024

Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Endocrinology Research (CDOER), Westmead Institute for Medical Research, Westmead, Sydney, NSW 2145, Australia.

Background: Recent findings have highlighted that abnormal energy metabolism is a key feature of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Emerging evidence suggests that nutritional ketosis could offer therapeutic benefits, including potentially slowing or even reversing disease progression. This systematic review aims to synthesise the literature on ketogenic interventions to evaluate the impact in ADPKD.

Retroperitoneal teratomas are rare neoplasms in neonates, presenting with nonspecific symptoms and variable clinical features, making diagnosis challenging. Radiological investigations, particularly fetal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography, play a critical role in their detection. Differential diagnoses include neuroblastoma, adrenal hemorrhage, and congenital cystic lesions, which share overlapping clinical and imaging features.

Bosniak classification version 2019 (v2019) was a major revision to version 2005 (v2005) that defined cystic renal mass subclasses based on wall or septa features. To determine the proportion of malignancy within cystic renal masses stratified by Bosniak classification v2019 class and feature-based subclass. MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched on July 24, 2023 for studies published in 2019 or later that reported cystic renal masses that underwent renal-mass CT or MRI, were assessed using Bosniak v2019, and had a reference standard (histopathology indicating benignity or malignancy or ≥5-year imaging follow-up indicating benignity).
