In various applications, the pore structure of a porous medium must be controlled to facilitate heat and mass transfer, which considerably influence the system performance. Freeze-casting is a versatile technique for creating aligned pores; However, because of the complexity of the associated equipment and the energy inefficiency of liquid-nitrogen-based cooling in a room-temperature environment, limits scalability for industrial applications. This study is aimed at establishing a novel freeze-casting strategy with a simple mold design combining heat-conductive and insulating materials for long-range pore alignment via directional ice growth under deep-freezing conditions, rendering it feasible for large-scale production.

Chicory species, particularly Cichorium endive Supp. Pumillum, also, known as Egyptian chicory, are globally recognized for their rich content of bioactive secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and phenolics. These metabolites are highly valued for their pharmaceutical, dietary, and commercial applications.

Here, we report a simple method to prepare near-IR (NIR) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates by quickly freezing a citrate-capped Au nanoparticle (AuNP) solution in liquid nitrogen, followed by thawing it at room temperature. This process aggregates AuNPs in a controlled manner by forming ice crystals with smaller grain sizes when compared to a slow freezing process. The resulting smaller AuNP aggregates remain suspended in solution long enough to conduct high-throughput chemical analysis in a microwell plate using the NIR SERS spectroscopy.

Electronic address:

Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) is a selective pulmonary vasodilator that is used as a treatment for persistent pulmonary hypertension in neonates (PPHN) with hypoxic respiratory failure. The generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species might induce oxidative/nitrosative damage to multiple organs. There is an increasing scientific and clinical interest in the determination of specific biomarkers to measure the degree of oxidative/nitrosative stress in non-invasively collected biofluids.

Liquid crystal monomers in soil: Developing priority list based on the proposed soil health indicators.

J Hazard Mater

January 2025

National Engineering Laboratory for Lake Pollution Control and Ecological Restoration, State Environmental Protection Key Laboratory for Lake Pollution Control, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, Beijing 100012, China. Electronic address:

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging pollutants that have attracted attention recently due to their unique chemical properties and wide applications. However, in-depth research on LCMs' potential risks to soil health remains blank. Therefore, 107 LCMs and nine soil health characterization proteins/enzymes were selected as research objects in this study.
