AI Article Synopsis

  • The study examined how nutritional status before treatment affects survival in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients.
  • Significant findings showed that patients with an ideal body weight percentage (IBW%) below 90% and low serum albumin levels had worse outcomes in overall survival and freedom from distant metastasis.
  • Independent factors like reduced IBW% and low albumin levels were linked to poorer prognoses, indicating the importance of addressing nutritional status in NPC treatment.

Article Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between pretreatment nutritional status and prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).

Methods: Pretreatment nutritional status was evaluated by ideal body weight percentile (IBW%) and serum albumin for 512 patients with NPC who underwent radical radiotherapy. Kaplan-Meier methods, log-rank test, and a Cox model were applied for survival analysis.

Results: Before radiotherapy, IBW% <90% was related to poorer overall survival (OS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS; p = .031 and p = .012, respectively); albumin ≤43.0 g/L was related to poorer OS and DMFS (p < .001 and p = .042, respectively); both IBW% and albumin were independent prognostic factors for OS; those patients with IBW% <90% and albumin ≤43.0 g/L simultaneously had the worst OS and DMFS.

Conclusion: Decrease of pretreatment IBW% and albumin was related to poorer survival of NPC.

Ultrasonographic renal length-to-aorta ratio is an ideal reflection of renal health in dogs. Earlier studies have highlighted the need for breed-specific reference intervals for this parameter. The aim of this study was to establish a breed-specific reference interval of kidney length to aorta ratio (KL:Ao) in Chippiparai dogs, a breed of Indian sighthounds.

Background: The American Heart Association defines cardiovascular health in terms of four behaviors (smoking, diet, physical activity, and body weight) and three factors (plasma glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure). By this definition, the prevalence of ideal cardiovascular health behaviors and factors (ICHBF) is negatively correlated with all-cause mortality and risks of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and malignancy.

Aim: To investigate the changing trends of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health scores in the Kailuan study population from 2006 to 2011.

The poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, a significant ectoparasite causing diseases in poultry, is globally prevalent and necessitates effective control strategies. There are restrictions on the use of acaricides in poultry across several nations due to worries about medication residues. Consequently, finding safe and efficient treatments for PRM is imperative.

Nutritional approach has been intensely investigated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, but, despite many sparse reports, at present, there is not a universally accepted specific diet. In fact, nutritional requirements and, therefore, the ideal diet, may vary according to disease type, extension and activity. Among nutritional related issue in IBD, obesity has become a relevant one.

The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a fat-storing mammal that undergoes annual periods of hibernation to mitigate the effects of food scarcity, low ambient temperatures, and reduced photoperiod that characterize winter. Like other hibernating species, this animal suppresses its metabolic rate by downregulating nonessential genes and processes in order to prolong available energy stores and limit waste accumulation throughout the season. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, single-stranded, noncoding RNAs that bind to mRNA and mediate post-transcriptional suppression, making miRNA ideal for modulating widespread changes in gene expression, including global downregulation typified by metabolic rate depression.
