In order to understand changes in the functioning and the community structure of intertidal ecosystem in sewage-impacted sites, a long-term monitoring coverage study (2004-2011) was carried out on abrasion platforms of the SW Atlantic. The intertidal zone is characterized by the mytilid Brachidontes rodriguezii, an ecosystem engineer. Since the austral spring of 2008, a demographic explosion of an invader polychaetes, Boccardia proboscidea, has produced massive biogenic structures around the sewage discharge outfall. Cover percentage of this polychaete reached almost 100% in sewage-impacted sites but low or no coverage at all in Reference Sites. The density of B. rodriguezii declined due to the biogenic reefs stifles these mytilids. The massive settlement of B. proboscidea among mussels, the rapid growth and the tube construction smothers the mussels in sewage-impacted sites.

The effects of untreated wastewater and shore levels on zoobenthic diversity, species accumulation, and abundance-biomass relationships were studied on intertidal rocky shores of central Patagonia, Argentina. Winter samples (2015) from two sewage-impacted and two reference sites showed that pollution disrupted macrozoobenthic diversity and zonation. A total of 83 taxa were identified, with polychaetes (31 species), mollusks (22), and crustaceans (21) being the most diverse.

We assessed seasonal and spatial variability of seawater quality and bacterial pollution in two sewage-impacted and two reference rocky shores in the area of Comodoro Rivadavia, the largest city in central Patagonia. Samples taken from winter 2015 to autumn 2017 at different intertidal levels showed that the impacted sites experienced a decrease of salinity-more pronounced towards the autumn-, a slightly higher turbidity, the lowest values of dissolved oxygen, and significantly higher concentrations of nitrates throughout the year. They also were up to ten times above the legal limit of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) for recreation and fishing areas.

The contamination of marine ecosystems by contaminants of emerging concern such as personal care products or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances is of increasing concern. This work assessed the concentrations of selected contaminants of emerging concern in water and sediment of European aquaculture areas, to evaluate their co-variation with legacy contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and faecal biomarkers, and estimate the risks associated with their occurrence. The 9 study sites were selected in 7 European countries to be representative of the aquaculture activities of their region: 4 sites in the Atlantic Ocean and 5 in the Mediterranean Sea.
