A series of dibenzocoronene tetracarboxdiimide derivatives decorated with alkyl swallow-tail and alkoxy moieties were synthesized, and their structures were characterized. 2,3-Dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) as an effective oxidant was first used in the benzannulation of perylene diimides with the almost quantitative yield. The thermotropic behavior was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarization optical microscopy (POM). The introduction of alkyl swallow-tail and alkoxy substituents facilitates thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior. The branching site of alkyl swallow-tail units at the α position and the longer alkoxy chains played a similar role in lowering the mesophase transition as well as isotropization transition temperatures. The UV-vis absorption spectra of all compounds appeared as absorption in 425-600 nm region, and POM images of certain compounds exhibited characteristic columnar hexagonal (Col(h)) packing and readily self-assembled into a homeotropic alignment toward the substrate.

Single perylene diimide (PDI) used as a non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) in organic solar cells (OSCs) is enticing because of its low cost and excellent stability. To improve the photovoltaic performance, it is vital to narrow the bandgap and regulate the stacking behavior. To address this challenge, we synthesize soluble perylenetetracarboxylic bisbenzimidazole (PTCBI) molecules with a bulky side chain at the bay region, by replacing the widely used "swallow tail" type alkyl chains at the imide position of PDI molecules with a planar benzimidazole structure.

Tristriazolotriazines (TTTs) with a threefold alkoxyphenyl substitution were prepared and studied by DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray scattering. Six pentyloxy chains are sufficient to induce liquid-crystalline behavior in these star-shaped compounds. Thermotropic properties of TTTs with varying substitution patterns and a periphery of linear chains of different lengths, branching in the chain and swallow-tails, are compared.

The dimensionality of self-assembled nanostructures plays an essential role for their properties and applications. Herein, an understanding of the transition from weakly to strongly coupled layers in soft matter systems is provided involving in-plane organized π-conjugated rods. For this purpose, bolaamphiphilic triblock molecules consisting of a rigid biphenyl core, polar glycerol groups at the ends, and a branched (swallow-tail) or linear alkyl or semiperfluoroalkyl chain in lateral position have been synthesized and investigated.

A series of T-shaped polyphilic molecules composed of a rigid linear biphenyl core with a polar glycerol group at each end and one swallow-tail semiperfluorinated lateral chain were synthesized and their thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) phases were investigated by X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, and microscopy. The compounds have a long alkyl spacer between the aromatic core and the fluorinated C(n)F(2n+1) ends, where n = 4, 6, 8, and 10. Upon melting, all compounds start with lamellar LC phases, followed on heating by a rectangular columnar ribbon phase with c2mm symmetry.
