Maintenance of a central high frequency synapse in the absence of synaptic activity.

Front Cell Neurosci

November 2024

Department of Functional Neuroanatomy, Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Heidelberg University, Heidelberg, Germany.

Activity has long been considered essential for circuit formation and maintenance. This view has recently been challenged by proper synaptogenesis and only mildly affected synapse maintenance in the absence of synaptic activity in forebrain neurons. Here, we investigated whether synaptic activity is necessary for the development and maintenance of the calyx of Held synapse.

APP fragment controls both ionotropic and non-ionotropic signaling of NMDA receptors.

Neuron

August 2024

Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, INSERM, Institut de Pharmacologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire, 06560 Valbonne, France. Electronic address:

NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are ionotropic receptors crucial for brain information processing. Yet, evidence also supports an ion-flux-independent signaling mode mediating synaptic long-term depression (LTD) and spine shrinkage. Here, we identify AETA (Aη), an amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) cleavage product, as an NMDAR modulator with the unique dual regulatory capacity to impact both signaling modes.

Keratan sulfate, an electrosensory neurosentient bioresponsive cell instructive glycosaminoglycan.

Glycobiology

April 2024

Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW 2052, Australia.

The roles of keratan sulfate (KS) as a proton detection glycosaminoglycan in neurosensory processes in the central and peripheral nervous systems is reviewed. The functional properties of the KS-proteoglycans aggrecan, phosphacan, podocalyxcin as components of perineuronal nets in neurosensory processes in neuronal plasticity, cognitive learning and memory are also discussed. KS-glycoconjugate neurosensory gels used in electrolocation in elasmobranch fish species and KS substituted mucin like conjugates in some tissue contexts in mammals need to be considered in sensory signalling.

[Implementation of screening for cytomegalovirus congenital infection in a French type 3 maternity].

Objectives: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common congenital infection and the leading cause of infectious neurosensorial disability in newborns. We wanted to organize the management of women from the beginning of pregnancy allowing access to antenatal treatment with valaciclovir, recognized since 2020 as limiting materno-fetal transmission. To this end, we set up and evaluated the interest of systematic screening for CMV infection in our maternity.

Objectives: Commercially available auditory steady state response (ASSR) systems are widely used to obtain hearing thresholds in the pediatric population objectively. Children are often examined during natural or induced sleep so that the recorded ASSRs are of subcortical origin, the inferior colliculus being often designated as the main ASSR contributor in these conditions. This report presents data from a battery of auditory neurophysiological objective tests obtained in 3 cases of severe brainstem dysfunction in sleeping children.
