Article Synopsis
  • In the early 20th century, Japan made significant contributions to cancer research, starting with the 1915 experiment by Yamagiwa and Ichikawa, which induced skin cancer in rabbits using coal tar.
  • In 1932, Sasaki and Yoshida discovered liver cancer in rats through a specific diet involving a chemical compound, marking the first artificial cancer found in internal organs.
  • Finally, in 1967, Sugimura induced stomach cancer in mice with a chemical mutagen, reinforcing the link between DNA abnormalities and cancer development.

Article Synopsis
  • The stability of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is significantly influenced by the composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on lithium metal anodes, which was improved in this study through the use of bisalts additives in carbonate-based electrolytes.
  • The successful formulation led to the creation of an inorganic-rich SEI layer containing compounds like LiF, polythionate, and LiN, which also helped reduce corrosion of aluminum current collectors.
  • The bisalts additives, specifically EL-DO, demonstrated exceptional battery performance, achieving high coulombic efficiency and stable discharge capacities, indicating their potential to enhance both LMBs and lithium-ion batteries compared to other electrolytes.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) are known to regulate/stimulate osteogenesis, playing vital roles in bone homeostasis, rendering them strong candidates for osteoporosis treatment. We evaluated the effects of recombinant human BMP-7 (rhBMP7) and PDGF-BB (rhPDGF-BB) in an oophorectomy-induced osteoporosis rat model. Forty Sprague Dawley rats underwent oophorectomy surgery; treatments commenced on the 100th day post-surgery when all animals exhibited signs of osteoporosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of the Medicare MIPS in measuring clinician performance by looking at the rates of unplanned hospital visits after outpatient orthopaedic surgeries among Medicare beneficiaries.
  • The research analyzes data from 37,735 surgeries performed between 2018 and 2019 in New York State to determine how many patients experienced unplanned visits to the hospital within 7, 30, and 90 days post-surgery.
  • The study also investigates if there is a correlation between MIPS quality scores and the likelihood of these unplanned hospital visits, aiming to understand if the quality scores accurately reflect clinician performance.
