Profiles of physician follow-up care, correlates and outcomes among patients affected by an incident mental disorder.

BMC Prim Care

January 2025

Département de psychiatrie, Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal, Université de Montréal, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Objectives: This study identified profiles of outpatient physician follow-up care and other practice features, mostly after detection of incident mental disorders (MD), and associated these profiles with patient characteristics and subsequent adverse outcomes.

Methods: A cohort of 170,957 patients age 12 + with a new or recurrent MD detected in 2019-20 was investigated based on data from the Quebec Integrated Chronic Disease Surveillance System. Latent class analysis was performed to identify follow-up care profiles, mostly within one year of MD detection.

The first five years of implementing Missouri's medication first approach to opioid use disorder treatment: Plateaus, regressions, and underbellies of progress.

J Subst Use Addict Treat

January 2025

University of Missouri-St. Louis, Addiction Science, Missouri Institute of Mental Health, 1 University Blvd., Benton Hall, Room 206, St. Louis, MO 63121, USA.

Introduction: Missouri's Medication First ("MedFirst") approach promotes same-day and long-term low-threshold access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Since 2017, Missouri's SAMHSA-funded State Targeted and State Opioid Response (STR/SOR) grants have supported MedFirst services (both medical and psychosocial) for uninsured individuals with opioid use disorder at state-contracted treatment programs. Though MedFirst demonstrated early success, results - with attention to possible racial disparities - must be revisited after five years of implementation.

Substance use and substance use disorders (SUDs) among pregnant and postpartum individuals have risen dramatically, necessitating enhanced clinician education and intervention strategies. This expert review offers obstetricians and gynecologists (OBGYNs) a comprehensive overview of substance use during the prenatal and postpartum periods. We discuss the epidemiology, maternal and fetal adverse effects, as well as treatment approaches for major substances: nicotine, cannabis, alcohol, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and opioids.

Electronic address:

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a formidable barrier that restricts the entry of substances into the brain, complicating the study of brain function and the treatment of neurological conditions. Traditional methods of delivering genes from the periphery to the central nervous system (CNS) using adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) often require high doses, which can trigger immune responses and hepatotoxicity. Here, we developed a new AAV variant named AAVhu.
