[Left-ventricular bypass: characteristics of homeostasis].

Grud Serdechnososudistaia Khir

Published: August 1990

Experiments were conducted on donkeys to study the peculiarities of homeostasis in establishment of left ventricular bypass (LVB) by means of an artificial heart ventricle (AHV). Preliminary modelling of acute cardiac insufficiency makes the work of the AHV effective and ensures longer survival than that among intact animals. However, arterial hypertension and anemia accompanying prolonged work of the AHV and resulting from the interaction of the last named with the cardiovascular system sharply aggravate homeostasis and the course of LVB and lead to early death of the animals.

Article Synopsis
  • Semiconductor detectors for high-energy sensing are essential in various fields, including astronomy and medical imaging, and require precise characterization for optimal performance.
  • Current simulation methods mainly focus on charge dynamics after photon absorption but often ignore factors like charge diffusion and Coulomb repulsion that affect detector behavior.
  • This study evaluates existing simulation methods and introduces a new Monte Carlo technique that balances accuracy with computational efficiency, improving performance predictions for these detectors.

Despite the well-documented benefits of exercise and sports participation, young athletes are particularly vulnerable to musculoskeletal injuries. This is especially true during periods of rapid growth, sports specialisation, and high training loads. While injuries are an inevitable aspect of sports participation, the risk can be minimised by promoting the development of strong, resilient tissues through proper nutrition and injury prevention strategies.

Evaluation of hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure among groundskeepers in the southeastern United States.

Ann Work Expo Health

October 2024

Department of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL 35294-0022, United States.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to evaluate daily hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure among groundskeepers, characterize power tools used, and estimate lifetime cumulative HAV exposure dose.

Methods: Seventeen groundskeepers and ten office workers employed at two US southeasterrn institutions were recruited as a target exposure group and a reference group, respectively. A 6-d exposure assessment of HAV was scheduled, and vibration dosimeters were used to obtain daily vibration exposure value, A(8).

Aim: To determine the effectiveness of functional stress testing and computed tomography angiography (CTA) for diagnosis of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD).

Methods And Results: Two-thousand nine-hundred twenty symptomatic stable chest pain patients were included in the international Collaborative Meta-Analysis of Cardiac CT consortium to compare CTA with exercise electrocardiography (exercise-ECG) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) for diagnosis of CAD defined as ≥ 50% diameter stenosis by invasive coronary angiography (ICA) as reference standard. Generalised linear mixed models were used for calculating the diagnostic accuracy of each diagnostic test including non-diagnostic results as dependent variables in a logistic regression model with random intercepts and slopes.

Article Synopsis
  • Retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) serves as a biomarker for tracking disease progression in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), although the changes in retinal layers for progressive MS remain uncertain.
  • Analyzing data from 195 RRMS, 87 secondary progressive MS (SPMS), 125 primary progressive MS (PPMS), and 98 control patients, researchers found that certain retinal layer thicknesses could predict relapses and MRI activity in various MS types.
  • However, the variability in measuring retinal thickness limits the effectiveness of longitudinal assessments for individual patients.
