In 1954 the discovery of bursal function was one of the major contributions to the formation of the T and B cell concept of immunology. In 1978 the avian dendritic cells; bursal secretory dendritic cell (BSDC) and follicular dendritic cell (FDC) in the cecal tonsil were recognized. In 1982 the interdigitating dendritic cell was described in the periarteriolar lymphatic sheath (PALS) of the spleen. This paper is a retrospection of the stories of the discovery of bursal function and recognition of avian dendritic cells and includes the markers which can be used for monitoring and characterizing avian dendritic cells.

Chickens are a key species in both the manifestation of avian influenza and the potential for zoonotic transmission. Avian influenza virus (AIV) infection in chickens can range from asymptomatic or mild disease with low pathogenic AIVs (LPAIVs) to systemic fatal disease with high pathogenic AIVs (HPAIVs). During AIV infection in chickens, Toll-like receptor 7 and melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 are upregulated to detect the single-stranded ribonucleic acid genomes of AIV, triggering a signaling cascade that produces interferons (IFNs) and pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Purpose: Because chickens have excellent light perception properties, this study focused on investigating whether monochromatic light can cause photodamage in chicken retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).
Methods: Post-hatching day chickens were exposed to four different light-emitting diode light environments for five weeks, respectively, monochromatic blue light (480 nm), green light (560 nm), red light (660 nm), or white light (6000 K). The mechanisms through which monochromatic light influences the structure of the chicken retina were analyzed by detecting the morphological structure of the retina, gene and protein expression levels, and the ultrastructure of the optic nerve.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is known for its virulence and zoonotic potential, infecting birds and mammals, thus raising public health concerns. Since 2021 its spread among birds has led to cross-species transmission causing epizootics among mammals, eventually impacting fur animal farms in Finland in 2023. To analyze the infectivity of the Finnish H5N1 isolates in human cells, representatives of diverse H5N1 isolates were selected based on the genetic differences, host animal species, and the year of occurrence.

Salmonella typhimurium is a common cause of gastroenteritis, which infects animals and human. Protocatechuic acid has anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory and anti-pathogenic effects, and is expected to be an effective choice for alleviating Salmonella infection and intestinal injury. A total of 180 1-d female, yellow-feathered chickens were randomly allocated into 3 treatment groups, the controls (Ctr), the Salmonella-challenged treatment (Sal) and the protocatechuic acid treatment (PA).

Avian influenza virus (AIV) subtype H9N2 still poses a great threat to the poultry farming industry and public health worldwide, and the development of a new influenza vaccine that is safe and conservative and able to address influenza virus mutations is highly promising for application. HA2, the neck of the HA protein, and M2e, the extracellular N-terminal structural domain of the M2 protein, are conserved and effective protective antigens. In this study, the HA2 sequences were fused with three M2e copies (H9N2, H1N1 and H5N1) to the norovirus VP1 protein via the SpyTag-SpyCatcher platform to form self-assembled nanoparticles and display antigenic proteins on its surface, yielding pYL262.
