Published: July 2013

A newly developed lossy compression and transmission scheme valid for telemedicine is described. The system uses computed tomography (CT) images and is based on JPEG2000. Different compression rates were applied to different regions within the image. JPEG2000 with the Maxshift algorithm to encode a region of interest (ROI) was used. The ROI is an area in the image that is expected to exhibit a better quality than the rest of it at any decoding bit rate. ROIs were delimited by using several processes of thresholding and growing regions. Compressed images were encapsulated using the DICOM format with JPEG2000 Transfer Syntax before transmission. DICOM Storage Service Class was then used to transmit those images. The system was evaluated by transmitting several series of CT images via integrated services digital network (128 kbps). Results obtained after decompression with and without the Maxshift algorithm were compared.

DNA computing leverages molecular reactions to achieve diverse information processing functions. Recently developed DNA origami registers, which could be integrated with DNA computing circuits, allow signal transmission between these circuits, enabling DNA circuits to perform complex tasks in a sequential manner, thereby enhancing the programming space and compatibility with various biomolecules of DNA computing. However, these registers support only single-write operations, and the signal transfer involves cumbersome and time-consuming register movements, limiting the speed of sequential computing.

Adaptive Compression and Reconstruction for Multidimensional Medical Image Data: A Hybrid Algorithm for Enhanced Image Quality.

Department of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Engineering, Anna University, Guindy, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India.

Spatial regions within images typically hold greater priority over adjacent areas, especially in the context of medical images (MI) where minute details can have significant clinical implications. This research addresses the challenge of compressing medical image dimensions without compromising critical information by proposing an adaptive compression algorithm. The algorithm integrates a modified image enhancement module, clustering-based segmentation, and a variety of lossless and lossy compression techniques.

The Development of an Electron Pulse Dilation Photomultiplier Tube Diagnostic Instrument.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

College Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Hengshui University, Hengshui 053000, China.

A new pulse-dilated photomultiplier tube (PD-PMT) with sub-20 ps temporal resolution and associated drivers have been developed for use detection and signal amplification in the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) community. The PD-PMT is coupled to a transmission line output in order to provide a continuous time history of the input signal. Electron pulse dilation provides high-speed detection capabilities by converting incoming signals into a free-electron cloud and manipulating the electron signal with electric and magnetic fields.

To improve the contact fatigue life of gears, we studied the effect of adding a certain proportion of the Al element to a 20MnCr5 steel FZG spur gear under different heat treatment processes, characterizing the retained austenite and residual compressive stress on the tooth surface. The stability of the microstructure grain size on the gear surface under different heat treatment processes was studied, and the surface microstructure, phase structure, and composition of the gear were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The changes in the retained austenite content and grain size on the gear surface at a microscale of 2-100 μm were investigated.
