The authors give an account of changes of the carotid and peripheral arteries detected by ultrasonic examination in a group of 133 patients with different forms of primary hyperlipoproteinaemias. Stenoses in the extracranial carotid circulation were found in 31% of the group, stenoses of the peripheral arteries in 37%; in 18% combined changes of the carotid and peripheral system were found. The authors proved a rising trend of the number of risk factors with the rising number of arterial stenoses. The most frequent risk factors were obesity and smoking. In the entire group changes of the peripheral arterial system were found in more than half the patients (in 53%); in clinically asymptomatic subjects they were proved in 39%. The authors emphasize the necessity to introduce ultrasonic screening of the arterial system in all patients with hyperlipoproteinaemia.

Background: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) improve prognosis in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Nilotinib and ponatinib, second- and third-generation TKIs, respectively, have been reported to cause adverse vascular occlusive events such as myocardial infarction and peripheral arterial disease. However, little is known about the risk of cerebral infarction associated with severe cerebrovascular stenosis, which is a late complication of TKIs.

Background: Patients with solitary functioning kidney appear to be exposed to an increased cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of peripheral and central blood pressure on subclinical cardiovascular organ damage in a sample of children and adolescents with solitary functioning kidney.
Methods: Carotid ultrasonography was performed to measure the carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and the carotid distensibility coefficient.

Peripheral endothelial function, which accounts for the variability in shear stimulus, can be assessed using shear-mediated dilation normalized to the increased shear stimulus. Similarly, shear-mediated dilation of the internal carotid artery (ICA), an index of cerebrovascular endothelial function, should be normalized to increased shear stimulus. However, this approach has not yet been validated.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify variables at the time of clinical presentation which place patients at higher risk for mortality following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for symptomatic lesions. Further, this study will create a risk score for mortality within two years following CEA for symptomatic stenosis to help tailor future postoperative and long-term management by identifying patients who require heightened vigilance in postoperative care to facilitate survival.
Methods: The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) CEA module was queried for procedures performed for symptomatic (within 180 days) carotid bifurcation stenosis.
