The hierarchical expansion of the kinetic energy (HEKE) operator in curvilinear coordinates presented recently (Strobusch and Scheurer, J. Chem. Phys. 2011a, 135, 124102; Strobusch and Scheurer, J. Chem. Phys. 2011b, 135, 144101) relies on a many-body expansion of the metric tensor. It is shown how this expansion can be adapted to a specific system. An analytic formula is derived, which yields an estimate of the impact of a certain expansion term on the spectrum. In combination with the hierarchical structure of the many-body expansion and interpolation techniques, the memory consumption and evaluation time of the HEKE operator as well as the computational costs for subsequent vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational configuration interaction calculations are reduced significantly, which is demonstrated by studies on two small test systems H2O2 and formaldehyde (H2CO).

Albeit there is widespread application of thermally conductive polymer composites, one challenge is their typical negative temperature dependence on thermal conductivity (TDTC) due to the mismatch in thermal expansion between the polymer and fillers, creating voids at the interfaces. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of snakeskin, where rigid scales and a soft intergap manage expansion, we designed a segregated structure by coating a high-expansion high impact polystyrene (HIPS)/graphite (Gt) composite with a copper alloy. We hypothesize that the Cu alloy restricts the thermal expansion of HIPS/Gt while forming a pseudoconductive network, enhancing TDTC and thermal conductivity (TC).

We examined the role of state and county socioeconomic contextual characteristics in explaining Black-White child differences in permanency within one year of foster care entry. We estimated race-specific hierarchical linear models consisting of individual-level demographic and case characteristics of children, state and county socioeconomic contextual factors, and CFSR-3 performance-improvement plans. Findings showed that socioeconomic contextual characteristics were significantly associated with permanency for Black and White children in different ways.

The swift industrial expansion has posed significant environmental challenges, particularly in the context of water pollution. Industrial effluents consist of substantial amounts of harmful pollutants that enter the main rivers via various tapped and untapped drains/local water streams, causing alterations in their physical and chemical properties. This study investigated 153 grossly polluting industries (GPIs) that were identified to release their effluents into the main rivers through different drains within multiple sectors in the industrial zone of four northern states of India in 2023.

Understanding wetland change is critical to establishing and implementing international conservation and management conventions. With such knowledge, supporting sustainable development, making management decisions, improving policies, and conducting scientific research become possible. However, consistent information on changes in Chinese wetlands has been unavailable.
