Post-traumatic hypothermia has been effective for traumatic brain injury in the laboratory setting. However, hypothermia has not shown efficacy in clinical trials. With the results of a recent clinical trial, we hypothesized that hypothermia might reduce neuronal damage in acute subdural hematoma (ASDH) by blunting the effects of reperfusion injury. Twenty rats were induced with ASDH and placed into one of four groups. The normothermia group was maintained at 37 °C throughout. In the early hypothermia group, brain temperature was reduced to 33 °C 30 min prior to craniotomy. In the late hypothermia group, brain temperature was lowered to 33 °C 30 min after decompression. The sham group had no ASDH and underwent only craniotomy with normothermia. For estimation of glial and neuronal cell damage, we analyzed serum and microdialysate (using a 100kD probe) concentrations of: glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ubiquitin carboxyl--terminal hydrolase -L1 (UCH-L1). Hypothermia induced early significantly reduced the concentration of MD UCH-L1. In conclusion, hypothermia induced early may reduce neuronal cell damage in the reperfusion injury, which was induced after ASDH removal. MD UCH-L1 seems like a good -candidate for a sensitive microdialysate biomarker for -neuronal injury and outcome.

Neurosonography (NSG) is pivotal for rapid, point-of-care neonatal brain assessment. This review elucidates the comprehensive applications of NSG in pediatric care, emphasizing its role in early diagnosis and management of pathologies affecting the pediatric head-such as scalp lesions, misshapen calvarium, ventricular distortions, and cerebrovascular abnormalities, and its specific role in conditions like hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) across different neonatal gestational ages. We explore its diagnostic advantage in critical care settings, particularly for infants with stroke risk in sickle cell disease, ECMO-related complications, screening for therapeutic hypothermia, and routine neonatal intensive care unit monitoring.

Neonatal sepsis results in significant morbidity and mortality, but early detection is clinically challenging. In a neonatal rat model of endotoxic shock, we identified unique infrared thermographic (IRT) profiles in skin temperature that could identify risk of later mortality. Ten-day old rats were placed in a thermally stable isolette and IRT images of cranial (T), scapula (T) and rump (T) skin temperature were obtained continuously for 8 h following an intraperitoneal injection of LPS (or saline).

This study investigated the impact of multiple nerve block methods (local anesthesia, conventional radiofrequency thermocoagulation [CRF], and pulsed radiofrequency [PRF]) on thermoregulation. Focusing on hypothalamic function, the effects of local anesthesia, CRF, and PRF on central and peripheral temperatures were analyzed and compared. Our findings revealed that all three nerve block groups cause a decrease in central temperature, with the CRF group exhibiting the most pronounced effect.
