Aims: To assess the clinical performance of pro-B-type natriuretic peptide 1-108 (proBNP) for the prognosis of acute pulmonary embolism.

Methods: This study was ancillary to a recently published multicentre study including 570 patients with acute pulmonary embolism. ProBNP values were analysed using a new sandwich immunoassay proBNP1-108, Bioplex2200 (Bio-Rade Laboratories). Data was compared with BNP and N-terminal (NT) proBNP values. Adverse outcomes at 30 days were defined as death, secondary cardiogenic shock, or recurrent venous thromboembolism.

Results: ProBNP values were analysed in 549 patients, with 39 (7.1%) presenting adverse outcomes. All three natriuretic peptides were significantly elevated in these 39 patients compared with the group without adverse outcomes (BNP: p < 0.001; NT-proBNP: p < 0.001; proBNP: 0.044), with median proBNP values being 605 pg/ml (113-1437) and 109 pg/ml (30-444), respectively. Multivariate analyses revealed that proBNP significantly depended on patient age (p < 0.001) and renal failure (p=0.001), with proBNP values increasing with both factors. The areas under the receiver operating curve were 0.74 (95% CI 0.69-0.79) for BNP, 0.76 (95% CI 0.72-0.80) for NT-proBNP, and 0.70 (95% CI 0.65-0.75) for proBNP, meaning that the performance of proBNP was significantly lower than that of the two other peptides (p = 0.017).

Conclusion: ProBNP, BNP, and NT-proBNP values were significantly increased in patients with adverse outcomes after acute pulmonary embolism. However, the prognostic performance of proBNP for predicting adverse versus favourable outcomes was lower than that of the other natriuretic peptides, thus limiting the clinical relevance of proBNP as a prognostic marker in pulmonary embolism.

Aims: Outcome in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is determined by right ventricular (RV) function adaptation to increased afterload. Echocardiography is easily available to assist bedside evaluation of the RV. However, no agreement exists about the feasibility and most relevant measurements.

Understanding the significance of handgrip strength is essential for identifying frailty in heart failure patients. The aim of this study was to identify the association between handgrip strength and cardiorespiratory endurance while highlighting the importance of the musculoskeletal system in cardiac rehabilitation for patients with heart failure. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at Harapan Kita Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia, from April 2022 to April 2023, among patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) attributed to cardiomyopathy or coronary artery disease.

Purpose: Heart failure (HF) is a disease that leads to approximately 300,000 fatalities annually in Europe and 250,000 deaths each year in the United States. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a significant risk factor for HF, and testing for N-terminal (NT)-pro hormone BNP (NT-proBNP) can aid in early detection of HF in T2DM patients. We therefore developed and validated the HFriskT2DM-HScore, an algorithm to predict the risk of HF in T2DM patients, so guiding NT-proBNP investigation in a primary care setting.

Department of Radiation Oncology, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, 200025, China; Shanghai Key Laboratory of Proton Therapy, Shanghai, 201801, China. Electronic address:

Purpose: This study aims to assess whether dual anti-HER2 therapy with trastuzumab and pertuzumab increases early cardiac toxicity compared to trastuzumab alone in breast cancer (BC) patients receiving postoperative radiation therapy (RT).

Methods: Consecutive operable BC patients receiving postoperative RT and trastuzumab with or without pertuzumab between January 2017 and September 2020 at seven tertiary hospitals in China were retrospectively reviewed. Cardiac examinations included echocardiography, electrocardiogram (ECG), NT-proBNP, and cTnI at baseline before RT and during the follow-up.

: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially serious condition characterized by the blockage of blood vessels in the lungs, often presenting significant diagnostic challenges due to its non-specific symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of the alveolar-arterial (A-a) oxygen gradient as a diagnostic tool for PE, hypothesizing that it could enhance early detection when combined with other clinical markers. : We retrospectively analyzed 168 patients at the University Hospital Center Split.
