We present a study of the influence of high strain on the bandgap and the refractive index of silicon. The results of photoluminescence show that with the strain applied, the silicon bandgap can be adjusted to 0.84 eV and the refractive index of silicon increases significantly. 1.4% change of refractive index of silicon was observed. The strain-induced bandgap shrinkage and absorption coefficient change of silicon are considered as the main cause of the significant refractive index change. The present work indicates that the application of strain is promising to control the refractive index of silicon in devices so that applications such as compensation of thermal effect in optical devices can be achieved.

With the rapid advancement of information technology, the data demands in transmission rates, processing speed, and storage capacity have been increasing significantly. However, silicon electro-optic modulators, characterized by their weak electro-optic effect, struggle to balance modulation efficiency and bandwidth. To overcome this limitation, we propose an electro-optic modulator based on an all-fiber micro-ring resonator and a p-Si/n-ITO heterojunction, achieving high modulation efficiency and large bandwidth.

A Microfabrication Technique for High-Performance Diffractive Optical Elements Tailored for Numerical Simulation.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of All Optical Network and Advanced Telecommunication Network, Ministry of Education, Institute of Lightwave Technology, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China.

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are specialized optical components that manipulate light through diffraction for various applications, including holography, spectroscopy, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), and light detection and ranging (LiDAR). The performance of DOEs is highly determined by fabricated materials and fabrication methods, in addition to the numerical simulation design. This paper presents a microfabrication technique optimized for DOEs, enabling precise control of critical parameters, such as refractive index (RI) and thickness.

SPR Biosensor Based on Bilayer MoS for SARS-CoV-2 Sensing.

Biosensors (Basel)

January 2025

INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, Via E. Fermi 54, 00044 Frascati, Italy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for rapid, sensitive, and reliable diagnostic tools for detecting SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we developed and optimized a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor incorporating advanced materials to enhance its sensitivity and specificity. Key parameters, including the thickness of the silver layer, silicon nitride dielectric layer, molybdenum disulfide (MoS) layers, and ssDNA recognition layer, were systematically optimized to achieve the best balance between sensitivity, resolution, and attenuation.

Glass delamination is a gradual process that may not become apparent until late in storage. Over the past three decades, it has been a leading cause of drug product recalls due to glass particulate contamination. The appearance of glass particles in the solution marks the final stage of glass delamination.

This study investigates the role of pitch size in achieving high numerical aperture (NA) and focusing efficiency in metalens design, while demonstrating how high refractive index materials contribute to performance enhancement by enabling smaller pitch sizes through reduced filling ratios. Silicon-rich nitride (SRN) was chosen as the material platform due to its high refractive index, CMOS compatibility, and cost-effective fabrication. Two SRN-based metalenses were designed: a geometric phase metalens (GPM) and a propagation phase metalens (PPM), each evaluated at aspect ratios of 10:1 and 4:1.
