Article Abstract

The analysis of experimental, clinical and epidemiological data on the phytoestrogen properties of the components of flaxseed Linum Usitatissimum L., especially lignans and products of their biotransformation in humans and animals enterodiol (END) and enterolactone (ENL) are presented. Flaxseed is the richest in the vegetable world source of lignans (up to 0,7-1,5% of dry weight of seed), among which prevails secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SIR-DG). Plant lignans are characterized as natural phytoestrogen that reduce the risk of hormonedependent cancers of breast, uterus and prostate. Anticancerogenic activity of flaxseed lignans due to antioxudant effect END and ENL in the human body. The antioxidant activity of SIR, END, ENL and SIR-DG is higher than that of vitamin E and the antioxidant activity of SIR, END and ENL higher than SIR-DG. On the basis of evidence-based biomedical researches on various models in experimental carcinogenesis, on the tumor cells in vitro, in clinical trials in patients with hormone-dependent tumors, and, finally, in epidemiological studies have proved the anticarcinogenic activity of the components of the flaxseed and validity of recommendations for preventive and curative use in hormone-dependent tumors.

Thiourea induces antioxidant mechanisms of salt tolerance in flax plants.

Physiol Mol Biol Plants

December 2024

Science and Technology Department, University College in Nairiyah, University of Hafr Al Batin (UHB), 31991 Nairiyah, Saudi Arabia.

Salinity is one of the abiotic stress factors that affect plant physiology and cause various plant disorders. Thiourea, which consists of amino, thiol, and imino groups, is an antioxidant and growth regulator. The objective was to determine the antioxidant role of thiourea (0, 3, 6 mM) in attenuating the effects of salinity (0 mM, 50 mM, 100 mM NaCl) on growth, yield, and some biochemical compositions of flax ( L.

Purpose: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease that severely impairs patient's life quality and represents significant therapeutic challenge due to its pathophysiology arising from skin barrier dysfunction. Topical corticosteroids, the mainstay treatment for mild to moderate AD, are usually formulated into conventional dosage forms that are impeded by low drug permeation, resulting in high doses with consequent adverse effects, and also lack properties that would strengthen the skin barrier. Herein, we aimed to develop biomimetic lamellar lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs), offering a novel alternative to conventional AD treatment.

Oil blending is increasingly utilized to improve and model the characteristics of enriched oils. This study aims to investigate the effect of blending refined sunflower oil (rich in essential omega 6 fatty acids) with cold-pressed flaxseed oil (a source of essential omega 3 fatty acids) on the fatty acid composition, quality, color, and sensory characteristics of the resulting oils. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the optimal fatty acid composition was achieved in the sample with 20% sunflower oil and 80% flaxseed oil (20S/80F).

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on improving high-performance 3D printing composite filaments by enhancing fibre wetting and distribution using two techniques: solution (solvent-based) and emulsion (water-based) impregnation.
  • Results showed that solution impregnation significantly increased the tensile strength of PLA/bleached flax filaments (356 MPa), while emulsion impregnation was more effective for PLA/viscose filaments (255 MPa) due to enhanced fibre interactions.
  • The research highlights the potential for 3D-printed composites made from bio-derived materials, with impressive mechanical properties, supporting their use in large-scale additive manufacturing for structural applications.

A Polyphenol Decorated Hybrid Biomaterial: Structure-Function, Release Profiles, Sorption, and Antipathogenic Effects.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

Herein, nonwoven alkali modified flax substrates were coated with incremental levels of chitosan, followed by immobilization of tannic acid, via a facile "dip-coating" strategy to yield a unique hierarchal "triplex" hybrid biomaterial, denoted as "THB". The characterization of the physicochemical properties of THB employed complementary spectroscopic (IR, Raman, and NMR) techniques, which support the role of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between the components: chitosan as the secondary biopolymer coating and the tertiary adsorbed polyphenols. XRD and SEM techniques provide further structural insight that confirms the unique semicrystalline nature and porous hierarchal structure of the biocomposite.
