Working from a prior investigation, we sought to determine the validity of the claim: "It's okay for 12-year-old pitchers to throw curveballs; it's the pitch count that matters." Our previous expert opinion survey demonstrated that this statement was most probably false. The purpose of this report was to investigate the validity of this statement, and to determine if our sports medicine experts "got it right." Using the most current sports medicine literature, this statement was critically examined so that an evidence-based opinion could be given and compared with the results of our prior study.

Background: Humerus fractures caused by the throwing motion are extremely rare. They have been reported mostly in recreational adult athletes in their third or later decades of life. A pediatric thrower's fracture is even less common, with few reported cases.

Through extensive survey analysis, we investigated expert opinion in sports medicine. The study had 3 purposes: to provide clinical guidance for cases in which the correct action is not necessarily apparent, to examine expert opinion itself, and to delineate areas of future study. A total of 500 members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine evaluated a set of 25 statements on unresolved issues in sports medicine.
