Optical control of myopia has come of age: or has it?

Optom Vis Sci

Private Practice, San Bruno, California, USA.

Published: May 2013

This article presents a clinical perspective on recent myopia research related to the development and testing of optical treatments for controlling myopia progression. The perspective is from that of a clinician in private practice and a clinician researcher, both with long-term involvement in myopia management and research.

Clinical Relevance: The prevalence of male androgenetic alopecia is increasing worldwide. Evaluation of dry eye parameters and meibomian glands of male androgenetic alopecia patients may help to better understand the effect of this disease on dry eye and to provide appropriate treatment for these patients.

Background: The aim of this work is to evaluate the relationship between male androgenetic alopecia, dry eye, and meibomian gland function.

People with amblyopia show deficits in global motion perception, especially at slow speeds. These observers are also known to have unstable fixation when viewing stationary fixation targets, relative to healthy controls. It is possible that poor fixation stability during motion viewing interferes with the fidelity of the input to motion-sensitive neurons in visual cortex.

Statement Of Problem: Clinical studies evaluating the levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) in tears and conjunctival secretions of patients with ocular defects after using ocular prostheses are lacking. Therefore, a comparative evaluation of IL-1β levels in the defective eye before and after placement of an ocular prosthesis is needed.

Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to compare the microbiota and IL-1β in tears and conjunctival secretions of patients with an ocular defect after using an ocular prosthesis.

Background: Adalimumab is an effective treatment for juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis. Data are scarce on the effects of discontinuing adalimumab after control of the disease had been reached. We aimed to assess efficacy and safety of discontinuing treatment in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis-associated uveitis.

Engineering Research Center of Optical Instrument and System, Ministry of Education and Shanghai Key Lab of Modern Optical System, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, No.516 Jungong Road, Shanghai, 200093, China.

Background: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted much attention as a powerful detection and analysis tool with high sensitivity and fast detection speed. The intensity of the SERS signal mainly depended on the highly enhanced electromagnetic field of nanostructure near the substrate. However, the fabrication of high-quality SERS nanostructured substrates is usually complicated, makes many methods unsuitable for large-scale production of SERS substrates.
