Objectives: To investigate the influence of frequency-specific audibility on audiovisual benefit in children, this study examined the impact of high- and low-pass acoustic filtering on auditory-only and audiovisual word and sentence recognition in children with typical hearing. Previous studies show that visual speech provides greater access to consonant place of articulation than other consonant features and that low-pass filtering has a strong impact on perception on acoustic consonant place of articulation. This suggests visual speech may be particularly useful when acoustic speech is low-pass filtered because it provides complementary information about consonant place of articulation.

Precision oncology (PO) has significantly advanced lung cancer treatment by enabling personalised therapy based on genetic mutations. However, equitable access to molecular testing and targeted therapies remains a challenge, particularly in resource-limited settings such as the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS). To identify the challenges faced by SUS in caring for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in terms of access to Precision Oncology.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Institute of Neurosciences. Department of Biomedicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Large neuroimaging datasets play a crucial role in longitudinal modelling and prediction of neurodegenerative diseases, as they provide the opportunity to study biomarker trajectories over time. Noteworthy, the availability of these large datasets coexists with a paradigm shift in the theoretical understanding of these diseases: while classical studies aimed at defining disease signatures as group patterns obtained with static cross-sectional analyses, novel approaches focus on providing individual predictions in the context of phenotypical and temporal heterogeneity. This scenario is often aggravated by the fact that datasets are not homogeneous and suffer from missing points and noisy data.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

National Center for Neurological Disorders, Shanghai, Shanghai, China.

Background: Life-course models are increasingly recognized in dementia prevention but have too often focused on mid to later life, thereby missing major opportunities for prevention much earlier. This study aimed to reveal the associations between early-life factors and incident dementia risk, and the underlying brain imaging alterations.

Method: Eight early-life factors (maternal smoking around birth, birth weight, part of a multiple birth, breastfed as a baby, adopted as a child, comparative height at age 10, comparative body size at age 10, and child maltreatment) in the UK BioBank (UKB) were investigated.

Anadromous salmonids migrate seaward to exploit feeding and growth opportunities in marine habitats, yet how smolt biological characteristics influence their marine migratory behavior remains poorly understood. This study used 9 years of trout (Salmo trutta) population monitoring data from 15,595 tagged age-0+ parr, 1033 smolts detected migrating downstream in spring, and 99 adults detected returning from their first marine migration to the River Frome (Dorset, UK) to investigate the influence of smolt biological characteristics on their migration timing and maiden marine sojourn duration. Age-specific differences in the influence of smolt length on migration timing were found, with longer 1-year-old smolts emigrating later than their shorter counterparts within the same age class, but the opposite association existed for 2-year-old smolts.
