Objectives: This study aims to compare the effects of the thermal welding tonsillectomy and conventional cold dissection tonsillectomy on the postoperative pain.

Patients And Methods: Between November 2009 and May 2011, 60 pediatric patients (38 boys, 22 girls; mean age 8.4 years; range 5 to 15 years) who underwent tonsillectomy due to chronic tonsillitis or obstructive sleep apnea were included. Tonsillectomy with thermal welding was performed on 30 patients and conventional cold dissection tonsillectomy was performed on the 30 patients. Postoperative pain was assessed by visual analog scale. Postoperative first day pain score was accepted as 10 and the patients were asked to score between 0-10 for other nine days. Student t-test was used for the statistical evaluation of pain scores in the first five days, while Mann-Whitney-U test was used for the other days.

Results: In the first five day evaluation, the mean pain score was 35.83 for cold dissection tonsillectomy and 31.90 for thermal welding tonsillectomy. The mean pain value for the last five days was 15.6 for cold dissection tonsillectomy and 10.33 for thermal welding tonsillectomy. The mean pain scores of cold dissection tonsillectomy were statistically significantly higher, compared to thermal welding tonsillectomy for first five day, last five day and total 10 days (p<0.05).

Conclusion: We consider that thermal welding tonsillectomy results in lower postoperative pain, compared to the conventional cold dissection tonsillectomy.

School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518172, People's Republic of China.

Multifunctional materials are accelerating the development of soft electronics with integrated capabilities including wearable physical sensing, efficient thermal management, and high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding. With outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, nanocarbon materials offer ample opportunities for designing multifunctional devices with broad applications. Surface and interfacial engineering have emerged as an effective approach to modulate interconnected structures, which may have tunable and synergistic effects for the precise control over mechanical, transport, and electromagnetic properties.

Insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), as an important power semiconductor device, are susceptible to thermal stress, thermal fatigue, and mechanical stresses under high-voltage, high-current, and high-power conditions. Elevated heat dissipation within the module leads to fluctuating rises in temperature that accelerate its own degradation and failure, ultimately causing damage to the module as a whole and posing a threat to operator safety. Through ANSYS Workbench simulation analysis, it is possible to accurately predict the temperature distribution, equivalent stress, and equivalent strain of solder materials under actual working conditions, thus revealing the changing laws of the heat-mechanical interaction in solder materials.

This study investigates the physical and mechanical properties of biodegradable composites based on PLA/PHBV blends modified with different content of nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) of 5, 10, and 15 wt.%. Density measurements reveal that the density of the composite increases with increasing NCC content.

Innovative Heating for the Nano Age: Exploring the Potentials of Carbothermal Shock.

ACS Nano

Division of Advanced Nano-Materials, Suzhou Institute of Nano-Tech and Nano-Bionics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Suzhou 215123, China.

Heating techniques have underpinned the progress of the material and manufacturing industries. However, the explosive development of nanomaterials and micro/nanodevices has raised more requirements for the heating technique, including but not limited to high efficiency, low cost, high controllability, good usability, scalability, universality, and eco-friendliness. Carbothermal shock (CTS), a heating technique derived from traditional electrical heating, meets these requirements and is advancing at a high rate.

Cross-alignment of silver nanowires network for efficient nanowelding.

The performance of sliver nanowire (AgNWs) network flexible transparent electrodes is limited by large contact resistance, making it necessary to perform nanowelding to improve conductivity of the network. However, not all nanowire junctions can be welded. Our work indicates that the welding kinetics between nanowires depend on the crossing angle, with higher surface diffusion velocity prone to welding and fracture at nanowire junctions of crossing angles close to 90 degrees.
